JERSEY CITY, N.J. – In its first home game of the season, the Saint Peter's baseball team took down Long Island in a 9-6 game on Tuesday at Jaroschak Field. The Peacocks stormed back with eight unanswered runs beginning in the third inning.
The Peacocks (4-8) were first on the board, scoring one run in the first inning. The Sharks (4-9) then rattled off five runs between the second and third innings to take a commanding 5-1 lead over Saint Peter's.
Entering the bottom of the third, SPU started to gain momentum after
Ashby Vining homered to left field to bring the Peacocks within one at 4-5. It was his second of three hits on the day.
David Delgadillo came in to pitch for Saint Peter's and pitched four innings without allowing a single hit. He faced 13 batters during that span and helped the Peacocks stay in the game.
In the sixth inning, Saint Peter's tied the game at 5-5 before taking the lead at 6-5 with a
Tyler DeClusin single that helped
John Wade reach home.
Tommy Kendrick then singled up the middle to bring home two runners.
With an 8-5 lead in the seventh inning, Vining hit his second home run of the day to extend the Saint Peter's lead to four. The Peacocks were able to hang on in the top of the ninth inning to secure the 9-6 victory at home.
The Peacocks stay home in Jersey City to open up conference play for a series against Rider starting Friday.
