JERSEY CITY, N.J.- Saint Peter's Softball defeated Coppin State University, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at Jaroschak Field.
The first inning launched the Peacocks ahead of the Eagles after they scored three runs. In that inning,
Tai Turner accounted for the three RBIs with a single swing of the bat. She knocked a three-run home run over the fence in right center field.
Coppin State did not wilt after Turner's first-inning home run. The Eagles narrowed the deficit to one run in the top of the third inning, 3-2, after Xzylia Maravilla had an RBI single to right field. In the bottom of the third
Lauren Czerwinski made it a 4-2 ballgame with an RBI.
Saint Peter's sophomore second baseman
Olivia Christopher gave the Peacocks a bigger cushion when she had a two-run RBI single to right field. When Coppin State's Maravilla hit a solo home run to right field in the top of the seventh, it did not have a significant impact on the outcome because of Saint Peter's offensive outburst throughout the game. The Peacocks held on for the 6-4 victory.
Ava White picked up the win as the starting pitcher.
Brielle Coppola earned the save as she closed out the two-run game.
With Sunday's win, the Peacocks are now 5-8 on the regular season. The Peacocks and Eagles will meet again at the end of the month when Saint Peter's travels to Coppin State for a doubleheader on March 27.
