Peacocks Split Series With Red Foxes

BAYONNE, N.J. – The Saint Peter's baseball team took down Marist, 6-2, in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday at Veterans Stadium before ultimately falling in the second game, 4-10.

The Peacocks (8-22, 4-10 MAAC) put an end to their seven-game winless streak with their victory over the Red Foxes (14-18, 7-6 MAAC).

In the first game, Ashby Vining led the squad with three hits in four at bats and an RBI which was the first score of the game. Alex Rakas had the second most hits on the team with two, highlighted by a solo homer to deep right in the fourth inning.

On the mound, Cam Martindale pitched a spectacular game for the Peacocks. He pitched six innings, allowing five hits and just one run through 28 batters.

The Red Foxes got the best of Saint Peter's in game two of the doubleheader, but the Peacocks still showed positive signs. Six SPU players recorded a hit while three recorded an RBI.

Garrett Greco and Vining were the two Peacocks who had both a hit and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE:
The Peacocks jumped out to a great start, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Saint Peter's built the lead after Vining singled to right center which brought Greco home from second. After that, Tyler DeClusin hit a sacrifice bunt to score Tommy Kendrick before a hit by Tyler Smith advanced Vining home.

The Red Foxes didn't put a run on the board until the top of the third inning when they recorded a single run to make it 1-3. In the bottom of the fourth, Rakas extended the Peacocks' lead to 4-1 with a home run to right field.

Scoring came to a halt for Saint Peter's and Marist as neither team scored any more runs until the bottom of the eighth. Vining reached home plate for the second time of the day, this time on a throwing error. Smith then hit a sacrifice fly to bring DeClusin home which brought the Saint Peter's lead to 6-1.

The Red Foxes added one more run in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Peacocks took the first game of the doubleheader, 6-2.

GAME TWO: Marist slowly took a two-run lead after the first three innings, but it didn't last too long as the Peacocks came storming back in the bottom of the fourth.

Logan Baker hit a sacrifice fly to bring DeClusin home and cut the SPU deficit to just one at 1-2. Shortly after, Greco recorded a base hit to third which resulted in two runs as there was an error made by the third baseman to put the Peacocks up 3-2.

The Red Foxes responded well, scoring four runs in the fifth inning before tacking on two more in the sixth for an 8-3 advantage. Marist then made it 10-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Vining managed to hit a home run to make it 4-10, but it wasn't enough as the Red Foxes took game two.
