JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's baseball team suffered a 5-10 come-from-behind defeat to Siena at Jaroschak Field on Friday in extra innings.
The Peacocks (8-25, 4-12 MAAC) held a 4-2 lead over the Saints (13-22, 9-8 MAAC) going into the ninth, but a late surge by Siena led to a heartbreaking defeat at home.
Despite the loss,
Sean Martinez had a great game for Saint Peter's with two hits and three RBIs. His two hits were a double and a two-run homer.
Logan Baker and
Ashby Vining each recorded two hits apiece as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Peacocks got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With
Tommy Kendrick on second and Vining on first,
Tyler Smith hit a bomb to right field to advance both runners home.
Smith was then called out after trying to make it to second base as Saint Peter's led 2-0 going into the second inning. The Saints tied things up at 2-2 in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer sent out of left field.
The 2-2 tie continued into the seventh inning before Martinez hit a home run with Baker on first, putting the Peacocks up 4-2. In the top of the ninth, the Saints had the bases loaded with two outs. They hit a ball to right field and managed to score three runs to take a 5-4 lead.
With an opportunity to tie or win the game in the bottom of the ninth, the Peacocks delivered to send it to extra innings.
Ben Williams was on second base when Martinez hit a double, leading to the game-tying run.
In the top of the 10th, Siena surged for five runs as Saint Peter's trailed 5-10. The Peacocks couldn't put any runs together as they fell to the Saints in game two.
