Saint Peter’s Drops Doubleheader To Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Saint Peter's baseball team fell to Merrimack in both games of a doubleheader, 4-15 in the first game and 3-11 in the second, at the Warriors Baseball Diamond Friday afternoon.

The Peacocks (9-28, 4-15 MAAC) trailed early in game one of the series with the Warriors (13-27-1, 9-14 MAAC) and couldn't manage enough runs for a comeback. It was tight in game two but Merrimack delivered down the stretch to win by eight.

Tommy Kendrick, Garrett Greco, Tyler Cotten, Sean Martinez and Tyler DeClusin all mounted two hits on the day. Kendrick and Martinez each recorded a double while Cotten as well as Alex Rakas tacked on solo home runs to start the second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE:
The Peacocks trailed, 0-3, heading into the fourth inning after two Merrimack homers. Martinez then put SPU on the board with a single to right which scored DeClusin.

Between the fourth and the sixth innings, the Warriors added nine more runs to extend their lead to 12-1 with the help of a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth.

In the ninth inning, the Peacocks managed to score as Martinez and Jack Fitzharris ran to home unearned, making it 3-15. Saint Peter's then had the bases loaded, but could only come out of the situation with one more run after a walk sent Luke Schwartz home.

GAME TWO: Rakas got things going for the Peacocks in game two of the series with a home run deep to right field. Merrimack tied it up at 1-1 in the next inning, but Saint Peter's wasted no time regaining the lead as Cotten sent one out of the park.

The Warriors tied it once again in the fifth inning with yet another home run. Shortly after, Cotten hit a sacrifice fly putting the Peacocks back on top, 3-2. It was in the bottom of the sixth when Merrimack took its first lead at 5-3 with three runs, including a homer and a double that scored two.

The Warriors then pulled away in the next two innings, scoring six more runs to win 11-3.

UP NEXT
The Peacocks will play the final game of this series on Sunday at noon before coming back for a home game against Lehigh on Wednesday, April 30th.
