UNION CITY, NJ– The Saint Peter's softball team (1-5, 0-3 MAAC) dropped the final two games of its series to the Quinnipiac Bobcats (7-4, 3-0 MAAC) by a combined score of 18-2 in Sunday's doubleheader at Washington Park. Freshman
Danni Forrester launched her first collegiate home run, while
Hannah Klotz paced the offense with the lone multi-hit performance of the day.
Quinnipiac struck early in both contests, scoring six runs in the second inning of Game One and opening Game Two with a grand slam. The Bobcats out-hit Saint Peter's 18-7 across the doubleheader. The Peacocks struggled to capitalize with runners in scoring position, leaving 16 on base compared to Quinnipiac's nine.
WHAT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
Ava White (0-2) and the Peacocks retired Quinnipiac's top of the order with little trouble in the first, allowing just one hit alongside two groundouts and a flyout. The Bobcats broke through in the second inning, plating six runs behind a combination of singles, a double, stolen bases, and a pair of Saint Peter's errors before the Peacocks could record an out.
Rookie
Gabriella Rivera entered in relief and helped limit further damage, allowing just one hit over the remainder of the inning as Quinnipiac extended its lead.
Saint Peter's answered in the bottom half of the frame when freshman
Danni Forrester launched her first collegiate home run to right field, marking the Peacocks' second home run of the weekend.
Quinnipiac added another run in the fourth on a double and wild pitch before two home runs in the sixth extended the lead to 10-1.
The Peacocks managed one final run in the bottom of the sixth. Three consecutive walks loaded the bases before
Lauren Czerwinski drove in
Aine Curley, but a pair of foul outs and a fly out ended the game.
GAME TWO
Quinnipiac wasted little time in the nightcap, opening the game with a grand slam to right-center field.
Morgan Lipansky came on in relief of
Cessi Prince (0-1), allowing one additional run on a single, stolen base, and a double before retiring the side.
Saint Peter's threatened in the bottom of the first when
Olivia Christopher drew a walk and
Hannah Klotz doubled to put runners in scoring position. A Bobcat fielding error loaded the bases with one out, but the Peacocks were unable to bring a run across.
Lipansky settled in to retire the side in both the second and third innings before Quinnipiac added another run in the fourth on a double and single to extend the lead to 6-0.
Brielle Coppola entered the circle to finish the game, but the Bobcats added two more runs in the fifth on a two-run home run to seal the victory.
UP NEXT
The Peacocks return home to host Rutgers in a Tuesday doubleheader on March 10 at Jaroschak Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two to follow at 3 p.m.
