JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's baseball team showed a ton of fight in a midweek game against Lehigh, but ultimately fell by six runs, 5-11, on Wednesday at Jaroschak Field.
The Peacocks (4-33, 0-18 MAAC) had a great fight and kept a close tied game until the top of the fifth inning, but the Mountain Hawks' (13-26, 6-14 Patriot League) bats came to life and went home with the win.
The Peacocks recorded seven hits, all by different players, with four RBIs and four walks.
Linden Reaburn started on the mound and pitched through the first 2.2 innings, holding down the Mountain Hawks to only one hit, zero earned runs, and four strikeouts.
Jackson Thorne ended the game for SPU, also only allowing one hit, zero earned runs, and three strikeouts in one inning pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite the defeat, Saint Peter's started the game strong. After two scoreless innings, the Peacocks were first on the board in the bottom of the third as
Allen Ramos scored on a wild pitch. Shortly after, however, Lehigh brought home two runs at the top of the fourth.
The Peacocks quickly responded in the fifth with an RBI by
Bobby Lavely, as Ramos scored for the second time.
Heading into the sixth inning with a 2-2 tied game, Lehigh's bats came to life as it scored six runs. The Peacocks began their fight back, loaded the bases, and scored three runs of their own.
RJ Azarieh was the first as Ramos singled, then
Chase Fogg came home, and lastly
Max Abrams from a
Joey Dwyer single to third base.
Through SPU's hard fight and comeback attempt, the Mountain Hawks continued to extend their lead with an RBI single in the seventh and a two RBI double in the eighth.
Luke Schwartz followed that up with a single in his first at bat of the game in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough to get Saint Peter's on a scoring run. Lehigh finished the game off as the Peacocks came up short in the end.
