JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's baseball team fell to Niagara by a final score of 5-18 on Sunday at Jaroschak Field. The Peacocks showed signs of a comeback, but ultimately struggled on the mound down the stretch.
The Peacocks (4-36, 0-21 MAAC) gave everything they had, totaling 11 hits, but it was the Purple Eagles (19-15-1, 15-6 MAAC) who came out on top after scoring nine runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
Max Doninger had a great day in the batter's box as he finished with a team-high three hits and two RBIs. He helped cut Saint Peter's deficit to just four runs in the seventh inning with his hit to center field.
Steve Polizzi recorded two hits, which he has now done in two of the last three games.
Marcus Monroe and
Alex Angelidis each finished with three strikeouts on the mound for the Peacocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Purple Eagles scored the first run of the game in the top of the second. Later in the inning, Niagara had the bases loaded, but Monroe was able to get the Peacocks out of it with a strikeout.
Saint Peter's came up empty through the first two innings, before Niagara ultimately extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the third. The Peacocks finally got on the board when
Bobby Lavely hit a single to second base that allowed
RJ Azarieh to cross home plate.
The Purple Eagles managed to make it a 6-1 game after a costly error in right field helped a runner score. It wasn't until the bottom of the seventh inning that the Peacocks started to mount a comeback attempt.
With two outs and runners on first and second,
Alex Manent hit an RBI single up the middle. On the very next at bat, Doninger also singled up the middle, which was then followed by an error that brought in two more scores, making it 5-9.
Things began to unravel from there as Niagara scored two runs in the eighth inning and seven runs in the ninth. The Peacocks put together too little too late as they fell 5-18.
