Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Md. – Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Cornado) smacked a two-run homer in the seventh inning to lift Saint Peter's past Coppin State 8-7 in the opening game of a twinbill against Coppin State at the UMBC Retriever Softball Classic on Saturday. The Peacocks (2-8) also lost 13-5 to the Eagles (4-1) in the nightcap.
Trailing 7-6 in the top of the seventh inning, Alexis Gallagher (Narvon, Pa./Garden Spot) singled up the middle to lead off the inning and then she stole second before Harrison nailed a two-run homer down the left field line to give Saint Peter's an 8-7 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Coppin State put runners on first and second with one out after Nicole Boggs singled to right center with one out and Gabriel Ziller reached on an infield single. Saint Peter's hurler Shelby Beaver (Boyerstown, Pa./Boyerstown) induced a pop out to short and a then a groundout right back to her to get out of the jam and preserve the victory.
Francesca D'Amato (Lyndhurst, N.J./Immaculate Conception) paced Saint Peter's, going 5-for-8 in the doubleheader with one run scored and an RBI. Harrison added two hits, three runs scored and the decisive two-run roundtripper in the opener while Taylor Corretjer (Theills, N.Y./North Rockland) posted three hits, a run scored and an RBI on the afternoon.
Candice Van Horn fueled the Eagles with three hits and five runs scored in the to games and Boggs had three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored while Danielle Smith went 3-for-4 in the nightcap with three runs scored and two RBIs.
In the opener, Coppin State grabbed a 7-1 lead after four innings before Saint Peter's scored the final seven runs to come from behind for the 8-7 victory.
Trailing 7-1 in the fifth, the Peacocks posted two runs in the fifth to cut the margin to 7-3. Amber Velasquez (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) started the rally with a single and moved to third when Michelle Tinajero (Elmwood Park, Ill./Elmwood Park) reached on an error. Corretjer brought Velasquez home on an RBI single to right field while Tinajero touched home on an error on the play.
Saint Peter's then made it a one-run game with three runs in the sixth. D'Amato started the inning with a single to right field and Nicole Olmedo (Chino, Calif./Chino) reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at first and second. After one out, Chelsea Crews (Seattle, Wash./Mountlake Terrace) reached on a fielder's choice to force out D'Amato at third. With two outs, Velasquez plated Olmedo on a single to right field and then Crews touched home on a wild pitch and Velasquez scored on an error to trim the margin to 7-6.
Harrison then smacked a two-run homer to propel the Peacocks to the victory.
Coppin State scored twice in the first inning and four times in the second inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead.
Saint Peter's answered with a run in the third when Corretjer reached on a bunt single, stole second, moved to third and scored on Gallagher's RBI groundout to put the Peacocks on the scoreboard.
Coppin State added a run in the fourth, but Saint Peter's posted the final seven runs of the opener to rally for the 8-7 victory.
Beaver got the win in the opener after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits with one strikeout in the final six innings. She only allowed three hits in the final three innings.
In the nightcap, the Eagles scored three times in the third and five times in the fifth and never looked back to earn the split on the day with a 13-5 win in six innings.
Fresh off her game-winner homer, Harrison walked to open the second game and moved to third on D'Amato's double to right center. Sierra Parker (Chino Hills, Calif./Caldwell College) singled to shortstop to give the Peacocks a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
After Coppin State scored eight times to take an 8-1 lead, Saint Peter's scored four times in the fifth to trim the margin to 8-5.
Gallagher and Harrison started the rally with infield singles before D'Amato singled up the middle to bring home Gallagher. Olmedo followed with a two-run double to right center and Crews brought Olmedo home with an RBI single to right field to make it a three-run game.
The Eagles answered with four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to end the game after six innings.
Tori Feorenzo (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) took the loss in the nightcap.
The Peacocks return to action in the final day of the UMBC Retriever Classic. Saint Peter's and Saint Francis will conclude its game from Friday on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. The Red Flash led 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning before the game was suspended due to darkness. The Peacocks will also battle UMBC at 2 p.m. to conclude the three-day event.
