opening tee… The Saint Peter's men's golf team begins its quest for its first MAAC Tournament championship on Friday at the MAAC Championships at the Disney Palm Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. After finishing second in the event last year, the Peacocks have been seeded fourth in the 2013 and will be paired with Manhattan and Canisius. Saint Peter's will begin the first round on the first tee starting at 8:20 a.m.
last time at that event… TJ Sumigray finished third to pace the Saint Peter's men's golf team to a second-place standing at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships. Sumigray posted 71, 71 and 74 in the three rounds to finish in third place with a score of 216, four strokes behind the medalist. Andrew Gain finished right behind Sumigray in fourth place with a score of 218 while Eric Edmunds (15th place, 225), Greg Nordveit (22nd place, 231) and Brian Grubbs (37th place, 246) rounded out the Peacocks' five competitors. Saint Peter's notched its best standing in program history after finishing second, posting a 291, 298 and 301 in the three rounds for a total of 890. It was the three-best rounds at the tournament in program history.
last time on the green… Eric Edmunds finished 15th to pace the Saint Peter's men's golf team to an eighth-place standing at the Metro Honda Peacock Invitational on Tuesday. Edmunds finished with a round of four-over 76 to finish four-strokes behind five players that finished tied for first with an even round of 72. The sophomore posted birdies on the final two holes on the front nine. Nicholas Dilio posted four birdies on the afternoon thanks to shooting one under on the first, fifth, 10 and 18 holes to finish in 20th place with a score of 77. Brandon Molson (30th place, 79), Brian Grubbs (34th place, 80) and Andrew Gain (39th place, 81) also competed for the Peacocks in the team portion of the competition. Luke Previte (47th place, 84) and Steven Competiello (60th place, 88) both competed in the squad's home event as individuals. Saint Peter's finished eighth with a round of 312 in the final tune up for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships.
next time with the clubs… The team champion and the individual medalist from the MAAC Men's Golf Championships will participate in the NCAA Men's Golf Regional on May 16-18. If the medalist is from the team champion then the individual runner up will earn a trip to the NCAA Men's Golf Regional.
a successful fall… Saint Peter's won three of the seven events in the fall after winning the ECAC Championships, the Monmouth Quad Match and the Seton Hall Barnabas Health Invitational. Eric Edmunds won the medalist honors at the ECAC Championship and the Monmouth Quad Event.
a golf weekly favorite… Saint Peter's was tabbed as the Metro Atantic Athletic Conference preseason favorite according to Golf Weekly, finishing ahead of defending champion Loyola while Fairfield, Iona, Canisius, Manhattan, Siena, Rider and Niagara rounded out the poll.
high value on edmunds... Sophomore Eric Edmunds was named the MAAC Golfer of the Month for the month of September. The sophomore won the ECAC Championship and finished second at the Rutgers Invitational while averaging 73.8 strokes per round in 10 rounds in the month.
new feathers in the peacock… Head coach Peter Falloon added freshmen Steven Competiello, Nicholas Dilio and Richard Jakubowski to the team for the 2012-13 campaign.
about the coach… Head coach Peter Falloon is in his sixth season at the helm of the men's golf team. He is a 1965 graduate and was a member of the 1964 undefeated squad that won the MECCA Championship. Falloon was named the MAAC Coach of the Year in 2012 after the Peacocks finished second in the MAAC Championships.
