JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The NCAA has honored the Saint Peter's
men's soccer and women's bowling teams for exceptional academic
performance. The two teams earned the award, given to teams scoring
in the top 10 percent in each sport, based on their most recent
multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR).
It marks the third-straight year the men's soccer team has been
recognized by the NCAA. The women's bowling team reached the
standard for the second-consecutive year and the third time since
2004-05.
The Peacocks women's tennis team made the list for five-straight
years from 2005-10 while the women's cross country team (2005-06)
and women's track and field squad (2008-09) have earned the
distinct honor in the last 10 years.
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of
student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual
scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The score measures
eligibility and retention each semester or quarter and provides a
clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. The most
recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2008-09,
2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.
The NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly
recognizing their latest multi-year APR. The announcement is part
of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to
highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress
and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within
their respective sports.
Top performing APRs this year ranged from 978 to a perfect
1,000, with the majority of teams earning a perfect APR. The
976 teams publicly recognized for high achievement this year
represent 594 women's teams and 382 men's or mixed squads.
Multi-year APRs for all Division I sports teams will be
announced on June 11.
