JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Freshmen Jonathan Gomez (Cali, Colombia/Patrick Henry [Va.]) and Matea Samardzic (Split, Croati/Ekonomsko-Birotehnicka Skola), members of the Saint Peter's swimming and diving team, have been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Swimmers of the Week for the week of Jan. 22-28. It is the third time this season both swimmers have earned the weekly conference honor.
Gomez was named MAAC Male Swimmer of the Week after helping Saint Peter's to a pair of MAAC victories this week against Manhattan and Iona by winning five individual events and two relays. The freshman won the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.71 and the 100 back with a time of 53.70 while also swimming the opening leg of the winning 200-medley relay with a time of 1:36.92 against Manhattan. Gomez then won the 100 back with a time of 52.57, the 200 back with a time of 1:56.76 and the 500 free with a time of 4:45.31 before opening the winning 200-free relay with a time of 1:38.37.
Samardzic nabbed the MAAC Female Swimmer of the Week for the second-straight week after winning four individual events and one relay while finishing second in another relay to help the Peacocks to a pair of wins against MAAC competition over the weekend. The freshman won the 200 free with a time of 1:55.54 and the 100 back with a time of 57.31 before opening the winning 200-medley relay with a time of 1:49.35 to help Saint Peter's sweep the swimming events against Manhattan on Friday. Samardzic then won the 100 back with a time of 58.05 and the 200 back with a time of 2:03.36. She opened the meet with the opening leg of the 200-medley relay that won with a time of 1:50.30 before closing the meet with a second-place standing in the 200-free relay 1:43.23 against the Gaels.
The Peacocks have earned MAAC Swimmer of the Week recognition six times this season. The duo have each taken home the award three times with Gomez earning the honor on Oct. 16-22 and Samardzic receiving the award for the week of Jan. 15-21. The two freshmen both won it for the week of Dec. 9-15 and the current week.
Saint Peter's heads to Bridgeport on Saturday for the squad's final tune up before the MAAC Championships.
