Saint Peter's Swimming And Diving Returns To The Pool At Stevens Institute Of Technology On Saturday

opening dive... The Saint Peter's men's and women's swimming and diving teams heads to Stevens Institute of Technology for the first dual meet of the year on Saturday.

last time at that meet… Anastasiia Mushtei and Rachel Wuko each won two individual events to lead the Saint Peter's women's swimming and diving team to a 109-96 victory against Stevens Institute of Technology on Oct. 26, 2013. Jonathan Gomez and Nick Reipe won two events apiece to pace the Peacocks men's swimming and diving team in a 136-69 loss to Stevens Institute of Technology. Mushtei spent the most time in the pool after winning the 1000 free (10:33.35) and the 500 free (5:11.62) while Wuko took care of the short-distance freestyle with victories in the 50 free (24.73) and the 100 free (53.80). Wuko also anchored the winning 200-medley relay (1:52.18) that was started by Matea Samardzic, Nowras Halag and Christina Decisneros.  Samardzic also won the 100 back (58.40) and placed second in the 200 free (1:56.82) with a program-record time while Decisnernos won the 100 fly (59.77). Alexandra Sison placed second in the 200 IM (2:15.51), second in the 100 breast (1:08.90) and third in the 100 free (56.23).  Marie Feneron was second in the 100 fly (1:02.06) and third in the 200 IM (2:16.22) while Alma Lopez placed third in both the 200 free (2:00.93) and the 500 free (5:24.71). Feneron, Mushtei, Lopez and Christina Petrelis finished second in the 400-free relay (4:13.91). Gomez won the 200 IM (1:55.16) and the 100 back (52.39). Just like Mushtei on the women's side, Reipe spent the most time in the pool and won both long-distance races after taking the 1000 free (9:56.22) and the 500 free (4:53.04). Sean Dunne placed third in both the 50 free (22.26) and the 200 breast (1:03.08). Trey McGraw was third in the 200 free (1:46.60), Manuel Garcia finished third in the 100 fly (53.62) and Omar Hassan placed third in the 100 back (57.18). Garcia, Alejandro Rubin, Gomez and McGraw teamed up to finish third in the 400-medley relay (3:17.21).

last time in the pool… Matea Samardzic and Jonathan Gomez each won an event in the second day of the Sonny Werblin Invitational to pace the Saint Peter's swimming and diving team on Saturday. After winning the 500 free on Friday, Samardzic won the 200 back with a time of 2:03.58 on Saturday. Gomez posted a pair of second-place finishes in the first day of the Sonny Werblin Invitational in the 500 free and 200 IM and then won the 200 fly with a time of 1:52.91 and placed second in the 200 back with a time of 1:55.81. Sean Dunne finished third in the 100 free (49.15) and seventh in the 200 back (1:55.81). Bence Greifenstein was fourth in the 200 breast (2:12.93) and Eliran Epstein place fourth in the 100 free (49.16). Nicholas Riepe recorded a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 200 fly (1:59.02) and the 1650 free (2:19.11) while Igal Oren posted a fifth-place standing in the 100 free (49.17) and sixth in the 200 breast (2:19.11). Manuel Garcia finished seventh in the 100 free (49.31) and 11th in the 200 fly (2:00.72). Daniel Gayetsky finished seventh in the 1650 free (16:47.66) and 15 in the 200 fly (2:02.60). Alejandro Rubin was 10th in the 200 fly (2:00.72) and 15th in the 100 free (50.69) while Daniel Rueda placed 11th in the 1650 free (17:09.27) and 12th in the 200 fly (2:01.33) and Paolo Jimenez was 14th in the 200 breast (2:28.52). Gomez, Griefenstein, Garcia and Epstein teamed up to finish second in the 200-medley relay (1:38.22) and Epstein, Jake Schroth, Garcia and Dunne combined to place second in the 200 free (1:28.90). On the women's side along with Samardzic's victory, Marie Feneron placed third in the 200 fly (2:12.11) and fourth in the 200 breast (2:29.37) while Rachel Wuko finished fourth in the 100 free (53.63). Anastasiia Mushtei placed eighth in the 200 breast (2:34.33) and 11th in the 1650 free (18:06.96) while Jenna Carbin was 13th in the 200 back (2:17.20) and Karen Castaneda finished 16th in the 1650 free (18:33.83). Samardzic, Alexandria Sison, Feneron and Wuko finished third in the 200-medley relay (1:50.61) while Samardzic, Feneron, Sison and Wuko teamed up to finish third in the 200 free (1:41.25).

next time in the water… The Saint Peter's men's team returns to the pool when it hosts NJIT on Nov. 7 and then both the men's and women's teams will host Montclair State and Manhattan in a tri-meet on Nov. 8.

preseason poll… Both the Saint Peter's men's and women's swimming teams were picked fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Swimming And Diving Preseason Coaches Poll. On the men's side, Rider earned 80 points to be tabbed as the preseason favorite while Marist (72), Canisius (60), Saint Peter's (48), Bryant (41), Iona (37), Niagara (36), Fairfield (16) and Manhattan (15) rounded out the nine-team poll. On the women's side, five-time MAAC champion Marist was picked as the preseason favorite after earning 79 points in the preseason poll. Rider (72) finished second and was followed by Canisius (63), Saint Peter's (48), Iona (42), Siena (39), Fairfield (31), Niagara (21) and Manhattan (10) completed the nine-team field.

returning maac performers… Sophomores Jonathan Gomez and Matea Samardzic return for their second season in Jersey City after having a sensational freshman year. Gomez was named the MAAC Male Swimmer of the Meet at the MAAC Championships after winning three events and Samardzic was selected as the MAAC Female Swimmer of the Meet after winning three individual events and being a member of two relay winning teams.

about the coach… Brie Von Rosendahl begins her first season as the men's and women's swimming and diving head coach in 2014-15. Von Rosendahl comes to Jersey City after serving as an assistant coach at Montclair State for the last three years. She helped the Red Hawks men's swimming team to an 18-22 dual meet record while the women's team went 18-15 in that span. Both the men's and women's swimming teams posted a winning record in 2013-14 in dual meets with the men finishing the year 8-6 and the women going 7-4 and finished second at the Metropolitan Championships among Division III teams. She also helped three men's swimmers qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships in the last two years.
