Baseball Falls To University Of Texas At San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS - The University of Texas at San Antonio defeated Saint Peter's 15-3 in non-conference baseball action on Saturday.

Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y.) posted two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Jim Smith (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) and Vinny Maietta (Franklin Square, N.Y./St. Mary's) each had a hit an an RBI for the Peacocks (0-2) while Chris Hugg (Ironia, N.J./Randolph) had a hit and a run scored in the loss.

Tony Ramirez paced the Roadrunners (2-0) with a grand slam and two runs scored. Mitchell Matulia added two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored while Mike Warren posted three hits, three RBIs and a run scored. John Welborn added two hits, two RBIs and a run scored and Jesse Baker registered a hit, two RBIs and a run scored in the winning effort.

After the Peacocks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Roadrunners scored a run in the bottom of the first and second to take the lead for good.

Texas at San Antonio scored its first run after Saint Peter's walked the bases loaded with two outs and Warren singled home Tony Ramirez to tie the game at 1.

The Roadrunners added a run in the second after Grant Gibbs doubled to center and touched home on an error for a 2-1 edge.

Texas at San Antonio then broke the game open with 11 runs in the fifth to grab a 13-1 advantage. Welborn plated the first run of the stanza when he coaxed a bases loaded walk before Baker singled home a run and Tony Ramirez smacked a grand slam for an 8-1 margin. Gibbs send home a run on a bases loaded walk before Matulia hit a bases clearing three-run double to center field and Welborn capped the 11-run outburst with an RBI triple to right center.

The Peacocks answered with a run in the sixth. With one out, Hugg and Zach Rawson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) reached on consecutive singles before Maietta plated Hugg on an RBI single up the middle to trim the margin to 13-2.

Warren sealed the win for the San Antonio program with a two-run single to right field in the eighth for a 15-2 lead.

The Jersey City team added a run in the ninth. Nick Cardamone (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) walked and moved to third on Ariel Ramirez's (San Domingo, Dominican Republic/Babeque) third hit of the day. Cardamone then touched home on Moore's single through the right side to set the final score to 15-3.

Saint Peter's struck first with a run in the first inning.  With one out, Moore tripled to right center and touched home on Smith's sacrifice fly for the Peacocks first run of the 2014 season.  The Roadrunners then scored the next 13 runs and never looked back to take the second game of a three game series.

Ariel Ramirez has five hits through the first two games of the season after recording three hits on Saturday afternoon.

Nolan Trabanino earned the win for Texas at San Antonio after giving up one run on four hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work. Frank Morris (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman [Seton Hall]) took the loss in Saint Peter's debut, allowing two runs on four hits in three innings

The two teams conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 11 a.m.
