Box Score 2 NEWARK, Del. – Delaware swept a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday against the Saint Peter's softball team. The Bluehens took the first contest 4-1, and the nightcap, 3-2.
Erica Colon (Fairview, N.J./High Tech) recorded one hit and one RBI for the Peacocks in the opening contest. Amber Velasquez (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) scored one run and added two stolen bases.
Lisa Stacevicz tallied one hit and two RBI while Gabby Klecko chipped in with two hits and two runs scored. Giovanna Kolofer and Sarah Bencivenga each added one RBI.
Delaware got on the board early, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Bencivenga started things off with a single up the middle to score Jessica Grisler. With runners on second and third, Stacevicz hit the ball into right field to clear the bases.
The Peacocks countered with a run in the fourth inning. Velasquez drew a walk, and then stole second base. Nicole Olmedo (Chino, Calif./Chino) flew out to right field, advancing Velasquez to third. Velasquez scored off a base hit up the middle from Colon to cut the Bluehen lead.
Delaware added another run in the sixth inning, following a RBI single from Kolofer to secure a 4-1 victory.
Kelly Lupton had a strong performance on the mound, limiting the Peacocks to three hits and recording seven strikeouts in a complete game effort.
In the second game, Saint Peter's got on the board first, taking a 1-0 edge behind a sacrifice fly from Olmedo to score Velasquez from third base. The Bluehens countered in the second inning, as Danielle Wissinger singled through the left side to bring in a runner and knot the game at one.
Delaware scored two more times in the fourth inning, sparked by a wild pitch to advance a runner home. Later in the inning, Wissinger recorded another RBI base hit to give the Bluehens a 3-1 lead.
Saint Peter's cut into the deficit in the fifth inning, powered by RBI double from Olmedo. Delaware held the Peacocks in the sixth and seventh innings to earn a 3-2 win and complete the two-game sweep.
With the losses, Saint Peter's falls to 10-34 overall while Delaware improves to 23-22 on the year.
The Peacocks return to action, with a weekend slate of doubleheaders beginning with Fairfield on Apr. 26. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
