Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y. – Marcel Maddee' (Berlin, Germany/Gymnasium Villa Elisabeth) posted two goals to propel Saint Peter's past Hartwick 2-1 in the final day of the Mayor's Cup in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday.
Maddee', who paced the team with four goals and seven assists for 15 points last season, scored in the fourth and the 69th minutes to help the Peacocks (1-2-0) to their first win of the season. It was the senior's second multi-goal performance after posted two tallies in a 2-all standstill last season against Niagara on Oct. 5, 2013.
Santiago Mateus (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) notched his first collegiate point with an assist on the second tally of the afternoon while David Giddings (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) made two saves in the winning effort.
Maddee', Luke Fairlamb (Northampton, England/Unity College) and Louis Mobbs (Hull, England/Sydney Smith) were named to the Mayor Cup's All-Tournament team.
Dean Fowler notched the Hawks (0-2-2) lone goal of the afternoon in the second half.
After going the first two games without a goal, Maddee' scored quickly in the first half and then added a second tally in the second half to help Saint Peter's take the first-ever meeting against Hartwick and its first win of the 2014 campaign.
Maddee' converted a Hawks' giveway and turned it into a breakaway tally at the 3:32 mark to give the Peacocks a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
The senior then added his second marker of the day when Mateus dribbled into the box and found Maddee' at 68:44 for a two-goal lead.
Fowler got Hartwick on the scoreboard when he found the twine off a scramble in the box at the 78:08 mark to trim the margin to 2-1.
After Fowler made a one-goal difference, the Hawks had three more shots in the match to attempt to even the score. Jamie O' Grady missed high in the 82th and 87th minutes, but Hartwick's best chance to score came in the 85 minute. Jack Miller had his shot turned away by the Saint Peter's defense to preserve the one-goal victory.
The Hawks' peppered the Peacocks with 21 shots and outshot Saint Peter's 21-4, but only had four shots on goal in the match.
The Peacocks played 14 games in 2013 that were decided by one goal or less and all three contests in 2014 have been decided by one tally.
Saint Peter's returns to action at Villanova on Sept. 11. Match time is 4 p.m.
