Saint Peter's Swimming And Diving Hosts Bridgeport On Senior Day In Final Tune Up Before MAAC Championships On Saturday

opening dive... The Saint Peter's swimming and diving team will have its final tune up for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships against Bridgeport on Saturday. The Peacocks will also honor its senior class prior to the meet.

thank you, seniors… Saint Peter's would like to thank the 2015 swimming and diving senior class for their hard work and dedication to Saint Peter's and the swimming and diving team for the last four years.

last time vs. bridgeport … Marie Feneron, Matea Samardzic and Rachel Wuko each won two events to pace the Saint Peter's women's swimming and diving team against Bridgeport on Feb. 1, 2014. The Purple Knights edged the Peacocks 102-101 after winning the 200-free relay in the final event of the afternoon. Sarmardzic won the 200 free (2:06.72) and the 100 back (1:03.62). Wuko took first in the 50 free (26.40) and the 100 free (57.70) while Feneron won the 200 IM (2:25.45) and the 100 fly (1:06.73). Anastasiia Mushtei recorded the squad's final first-place finish in the 200 free (2:12.58) while the freshman also finished second in the 100 breast (1:18.02) and third in the 400 free (4:32.41). Alma Lopez placed second in the 800 free (9:29.69) while Cristina DeCisneros was second in the 100 fly (1:06.77). Christina Petrelis finished third in the 800 free (9:29.85) and Nowras Halag was third in the 400 free (1:18.55). Samardzic, Alexandra Sison, Feneron and Wuko placed second in the 200-medley relay (2:01.26) while Michelle Corpuz, Jenna Carbin, Sison and Lopez earned a second-place standing in the 200-free relay (1:53.27). Bridgeport defeated the Saint Peter's men's swimming and diving team by a score of 106-84. Nicholas Riepe recorded the Peacocks lone win before the Purple Eagles exhibitioned the final three individual events. The freshman won the 800 free (8:35.20). Manuel Garcia finished second in the 50 free (24.90) and second in the 100 free (54.23). Jonathan Gomez placed second in the 100 fly (56.28) while Sean Dunne placed third in the 200 IM (2:12.86) and Alejandro Rubin was third in the 200 free (1:59.92). The relay team of Gomez, Paolo Jimenez, Garcia and Rubin teamed up to place second in the 200-medley relay (1:48.74). Dunne recorded a win in the 100 back (1:01.82) and Omar Hassan placed second in the event (1:06.32). Riepe won the 400 free (4:08.97) and Gomez placed second (4:09.71) while Dunne (1:09.09), Jimenez (1:09.98) and Keith Kemenosh (1:20.72) finished 1-2-3 in the 100 breast. These three events were exhibitioned by Bridgeport.

last time in the pool… Matea Samardzic and Nicholas Riepe each won two events to pace the Saint Peter's men's and women's swimming and diving teams in a tri meet with Iona and Delaware on Jan. 18 hosted by Iona. Samardzic swept the back events with wins in the 100 back (58:41) and the 200 back (2:03.70) while Reipe won the 200 fly (1:56.27) and the 1000 free (9:46.29) and also placed second in the 500 free (4:45.06). Rachel Wuko and Marie Feneron each recorded a first-place standing and a second-place finish on the afternoon. Wuko won the 100 free (52.76) and placed second in the 50 free (24.46) while Feneron was first in the 200 IM (2:10.11), second in the 100 fly (1:00.30) and third in the 200 fly (2:11.65). Christina Petrelis finished third in the 1000 free (10:53.68) while Anastasiia Mushtei placed fourth in the event (10:55.12) and fourth in the 200 breast (2:31.75). Freshman Karen Castaneda placed fourth in the 200 free (2:00.86) and fourth in the 500 free (5:20.46). The relay team of Wuko, Samardzic, Castenda and Mushtei won the 200-free relay (1:42.82) while the tandem of Samardzic, Mushtei, Feneron and Wuko was second in the 200-medley relay (1:51.50). Igal Oren, Bence Greifenstein and Manuel Garcia also earned victories on the day for the men's squad. Oren won the 100 breast (59.09) and finished second in the 50 free (22.28) and the 100 free (48.51). Greifenstein won the 200 breast (2:11.97) and place second in the 100 breast (59.68) and third in the 200 IM (2:11.97) while Garcia took first in the 100 fly (52.13) and placed third in the 100 fly (52.13) and fourth in the 100 free (49.11). Daniel Gayetsky ended second in the 1000 free (9:58.30) and fourth in the 200 fly (1:59.38). Sean Dunne placed third in the 100 fly (52.59) and Eliran Epstein  was fourth in the 50 free (22.51). The 200-medley relay team of Dunne, Greifenstein, Garcia and Epstein was second (1:37.10). On the women's side, Iona defeated the Peacocks 149-128 and Delaware took a 187-98 decision while the men's team downed the Gaels 143-127 and the Blue Hens took a 200-80 margin.

next time in the water… Saint Peter's will travel to the MAAC Swimming And Diving Championships in Buffalo, N.Y., on Feb. 11-14.

preseason poll… Both the Saint Peter's men's and women's swimming teams were picked fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Swimming And Diving Preseason Coaches Poll. On the men's side, Rider earned 80 points to be tabbed as the preseason favorite while Marist (72), Canisius (60), Saint Peter's (48), Bryant (41), Iona (37), Niagara (36), Fairfield (16) and Manhattan (15) rounded out the nine-team poll. On the women's side, five-time MAAC champion Marist was picked as the preseason favorite after earning 79 points in the preseason poll. Rider (72) finished second and was followed by Canisius (63), Saint Peter's (48), Iona (42), Siena (39), Fairfield (31), Niagara (21) and Manhattan (10) completed the nine-team field.

returning maac performers… Sophomores Jonathan Gomez and Matea Samardzic return for their second season in Jersey City after having a sensational freshman year. Gomez was named the MAAC Male Swimmer of the Meet at the MAAC Championships after winning three events and Samardzic was selected as the MAAC Female Swimmer of the Meet after winning three individual events and being a member of two relay winning teams.
