opening pitch… Saint Peter's men's and women's cross country will compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships this Saturday, Oct. 29 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida. The races will be streamed live on ESPN3 starting at 8 am.
last time out… The Peacocks competed in the St. John's invitational on Oct. 16. Patrick Hamilton led the men in the 5K run with a time of 17:36.5 and Georgie Nicholes paced the women in the 4K run with a time of 15:54.7.
last time we competed… Last year's MAAC competition was held on Oct. 31st at Rosedale Park in Pennington, NJ. The men finished with an overall time of 31:07.39 in the 8K run with a final score 362 points. Returner, Marlowe Tooles led the men with a time of 29:29.47 in the 8K run. Kevin Olaya followed Tooles with a time of 32:30.85, Calvin Bannister posted a time of 35:30.07.
The women finished with an overall time of 26:24.30 in the 6K course with a final score of 360 points. Nicholes finished with a time of 25:20.0, Jodi Collymore followed with a time of 26:31.43, Jacki Anderson posted a time of 27:06.90, and Jovanna Larose added a time of 27:18.59.
the race… The ESPN World of Sports Complex will welcome 11 MAAC teams to compete in this weekends race. The men will kick off of the 8K run starting 8am sharp. The women will start their 6K run shortly after the men at 9am.
about the Coach… Phyllis Anderson taken on the role as head coach of the Saint Peter's cross country and track and field team. Anderson has guided multiple MAAC individual champions in 2015-16 at the league's indoor and outdoor track and field championships. She has built A. Philip Randolph High School track and field program into a powerhouse leading them to nearly 20 consecutive Manhattan borough championships along with multiple indoor and outdoor New York City titles. Anderson has coached multiple Olympians, including gold medalist Natasha Hastings (Team USA 2008) and Barbara Selkridge (Antigua, 1988). Anderson holds a bachelor's degree from Queens College (NY) and a master's degree from City College of New York.
Joining the team is assistant coach, Rudy Thompson. Recently he coached at George Washington High School since 2012. He specializes in sprints, distance, along with field events, discus, pole vault, and shot put. Thompson earned a bachelor's degree from North Carolina A&T and a master's degree from Brooklyn College. In addition, he has also completed an advanced certificate at Brooklyn college and course work towards a masters at Touro College.
