Saint Peter's Softball Drops Two Games At Fordham Tournament

BRONX, N.Y. – The Saint Peter's softball team dropped a pair of games at the Fordham Tournament on Saturday. The Peacocks lost 9-1 in six innings to Providence and then fell 14-1 to Fordham in five innings in the nightcap.

Candice Koch (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) posted two hits including a solo homer in the opener for the Peacocks (0-12) while Stacey Klempel (Winter Garden, Fla./Ocoee) posted two hits and an RBI in the nightcap.

In the opener, Providence scored two runs in the second, one in the third, two and fourth and four in the sixth to earn a 9-1 win in six innings.

Kiki Baldassari went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs for the Friars (10-10) while Brittney Veller added three hits, two RBIs and run scored and Emma Lee had a hit, a run scored and two RBIs in the winning effort.

Baldassari got the scoring started in the second with a two-run single up the middle for a 2-0 lead. Veller increased the lead to three runs with a solo homer in the third.

Koch then led off the fourth for Saint Peter's to trim the margin to 3-1 for the Peacocks second homer this season.

Lee answered back for Providence in the bottom of the frame with a two-run single to right to increase the lead to 5-1. In the sixth, the Friars scored four times on a Kelsi Luttrell RBI double, a Nicole Lundstrom RBI double before Lee scored on a wild pitch and Veller ended the game with an RBI single up the middle to complete the 9-1 win.

In the nightcap, Fordham scored four runs in the first, four runs in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth to earn a 14-1 decision in five innings.

Lauren Quesne posted a hit, a run scored and five RBIs while Lindsay Mayer had two hits, three runs scored and three RBIs in the winning effort.

The Rams (10-13) scored four times in the first to take a 4-0 margin. Sydney Canessa started the scoring with a two-run homer before Quense coaxed a bases-loaded walk and Ally Vergona hit a sacrifice fly. 

Saint Peter's answered with a run in the second to trim the margin to 4-1. Lee Harrison (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) walked with two outs and came around to score on Klempel's RBI double to right center.

Fordham responded with four runs in the bottom of the stanza to extend it lead to 8-1. Lindsay Mayer started the scoring with a two-run ground-rule double before Madison Shaw added an RBI single through the right side and fourth run touched home on an error on the play.

Mayer hit an RBI single in the fourth before Quense smacked a grand slam to cap a five-run third before Kylie Michael sealed the win with an RBI groundout in the fourth.

Tiffani Lambert (Lincroft, N.J./Middletown South) took the loss in the opener and Jackie Riley (South Amboy, N.J./Cardinal McCarrick) took the loss in the nightcap.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Sunday against Fordham. Game time is 12 p.m.
