Saint Peter's Softball Falls At Fairleigh Dickinson

HACKENSACK, N.J. – Fairleigh Dickinson swept a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday. The Knights won the opener 9-0 in five innings and then took the nightcap, 4-3.

Jackie Riley (South Amboy, N.J./Cardinal McCarrick) paced the Peacocks (0-27) with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Samantha Storms (Lake Geneva, Wisc./William Bay) added two hits and an RBI and Crystal Carlucci (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) added a hit and an run scored on the day.

Reanna Cervantes powered the Knights (9-24) with three hits, five RBIs and a run scored. Madelaine Wilen added three hits and three runs scored while Cheryl Lopez registered four hits, two runs scored and an RBI on the afternoon.

In the nightcap, Fairleigh Dickinson held on after Saint Peter's made a comeback attempt in the seventh, 4-3.

Trailing 4-1 in the seventh, Carlucci doubled to right field to lead off the inning. Alyssa Cuevas (Slymar, Calif./Bishop Alemany) reached on an error and Schieler Collins (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) walked to load the bases. With one out, Stacey Klempel (Winter Garden, Fla./Ocoee) then coaxed a bases loaded walk to force home Carlucci and Riley reached on a fielder's choice for the RBI with Cuevas scoring. Storms then walked to move Riley, the tying run to second, but a strikeout ended the game.

The Peacocks got the scoring started with a run in the first. Riley doubled with two outs and came around to score on Storms RBI single through the right side for a 1-0 lead.

The Knights then scored the next four runs to take a 4-1 advantage.

Madison Lerma tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the first with a run-scoring single through the left side.

Cervantes gave Fairleigh Dickinson a 3-1 lead in the third on a two-run homer and Lopez added a solo shot in the sixth for a three-run lead. Saint Peter's then scored twice in the seventh, but the rally came up short.

In the opener, the Knights scored in the first four innings to earn a 9-0 win.

Wilen got the scoring started in the first when she scored on a wild pitch before Cervantes smacked a two-run single to left center for a 3-0 lead.

Two runs scored on a bunt by Francine Villalobos to start a four-run rally in the second. Kellie Natham added an RBI single to center and Cervantes hit a sacrifice fly for a 7-0 lead.

Courtney Slye drilled a solo homer in the third and an unearned run scored in the fourth to set the final score at 9-0.

Carlucci took the loss in the opener and Riley took the loss in the nightcap.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Thursday in its MAAC home opener against Fairfield. First pitch is 2:30 p.m.
