JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's tennis teams went 1-1 against Coppin State University on Saturday afternoon in the Yanitelli Center. The men's team swept the Eagles, 7-0, while the women's team dropped a close 3-2 decision. The men's team overall team record improves to 2-6 and the women's squad overall team record falls to 0-10.
Men's Doubles Results - The Peacocks only dropped one set the whole match at No. 1 doubles. Playing at the spot for the first time this season, Gabriel Russotto and Jonathan Paredes fell 6-3 to Jorge Rodriguez Rey and Gavin Lewis. The No. 2 duo of Douglas Nover and Igor Khvorostian, and No. 3 group of Sebastian Ferrer and Justin Sinprasith, won by identical scores of 6-2 against the respective teams of Andres Diaz and Gabriel Franca, and Zaipo Oula and Igor Zapparoli de Souza.
Men's Singles Results - Hector Andres Jacome won against Rodriguez Rey, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1. John Oxner defeated Diaz at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0. Ignacio Tintore bested Lewis, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. Nover defeated Zapparoli de Souza, at No. 4, 6-3, 6-1. Russotto was victorious over Franca, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5. Ferrer closed out the sweep by defeating Oula at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0.
Women's Doubles Results - Stephanie Falcon and Azuri Hughes lost 6-3 to Brittanie Cahua and Tinashe Gwaze at the top spot. Marta Ortega and Aidah Muhammad were victorious over Ajla Hrnjic and Shariah Dunwell 6-3 at No. 2. Both teams had to default No. 3 doubles, resulting in no team claiming the doubles tandem point.
Women's Singles Results - The Peacocks and the Eagles both defaulted No. 6 singles. Falcon lost to Cahua 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. Hughes dropped a tough three setter to Gwaze at No. 2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Muhammad and Ortega won in straight sets at No. 3 and 4, respectively. Muhammad defeated Dunwell 6-4, 6-4 and Ortega won 6-2, 6-2 against Hrnjic. Jennifer Guilherme was able to win the first set but ultimately lost 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to Precious Udofe at No. 5. Due to both teams only suiting up five players, the contest only produced five match points, resulting in the 3-2 decision.
Up Next - The men's tennis team returns to the Yanitelli Recreational Life Center Bubble on Sunday, February 18 for a 2 p.m. match against Saint Joseph's University. The women's tennis team has one day off, before returning to the Yanitelli Recreational Life Center Bubble on Monday, February 19 for a combined match with the men against Hofstra University at 12 p.m.
