Opening Pitch
The Saint Peter's softball team will return to Baltimore, Maryland to compete in the UMBC Retriever Classic from March 24-25. The Peacocks will face non-conference opponents UMBC and Binghamton. The team will start the first game at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 against host, UMBC and will take on Binghamton on Sunday, March 25 with first pitch at 9 a.m. followed by another matchup with UMBC at 1:30 p.m.
Word on Retrievers
UMBC enters Saturday's game with a 2-17 overall record. Most recently, the Retrievers dropped to Drexel 10-8 on March 18 in the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament. Imani Dawson leads the team with three home runs and eight RBI's.
Word on Bearcats
Binghamton enters the weekend with a 3-10 overall record. Most recently, the Bearcats dropped to Hofstra 9-1 on March 18 in the St. John's Invitational. Kate Richard leads the team with three home runs, six runs and eight RBI's.
Last Time Out
The Peacocks competed in the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament from March 17-18.The Peacocks faced La Salle twice, dropping the first game 10-2 and the second 15-1. The team was also defeated by Drexel 11-0 and Sacred Heart, 5-1 at the tournament.
Welcome Back
The Saint Peter's softball team returns 10 players, including two seniors, (Nicole Feoli, Shamar Sanchez) four juniors, (Schieler Collins, Harley Connors, Tiffani Lambert, Sydney Ramsey), and four sophomores, (Theamaris Ramirez, Brianna Hutchinson, Georgia Verrastro).
New Additions
The Peacocks welcome six players to the team including three freshman, (Alyssa Adams / West Islip, NY), (Natasha Solano / Elizabeth, NJ) and (Taylor Lewis / Mason, OH), (Michelle Kugelman / Middletown, NJ) and three Juniors, ( Taylor White / Arlington, VA), Mary Mastriani / Sparta, NJ) and (Barbara Verrastro / Scott Township, PA).
Meet the Heach Coach
Chris Stelma will begin his second season at the helm of the Saint Peter's Softball team. In Stelma's first season, the team recorded 115 runs with six wins, including four conference wins in 2017. The Peacocks earned a series sweep for the first time in three years and improved their batting average from .199 in 2016 to .247 in 2017. Stelma had nine student-athletes named to the MAAC All-Academic team and one player named to the All-MAAC Rookie team.
He most recently served as an assistant coach at Division III, William Paterson University in New Jersey during the 2016 season. Prior to joining William Paterson, he was the owner of Fielder's Choice Baseball/Kaboom Softball in Andover, where he coordinated training, league play, tournaments and facilities, and served as the head coach of the U18 Showcase baseball and softball teams. Stelma was the baseball head coach at his alma mater, County College of Morris, during the fall of 2007.
Stelma earned a bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Rhode Island in 2006. While at URI, Stelma was a member of the baseball team where he played two seasons at shortstop for the Rams, making 31 starts and appearing in over 40 games. Prior to transferring to URI, Stelma began his collegiate career at County College of Morris where he played for current Saint Peter's assistant coach Ed Moskal in 2003. He was named All-Region and All-Garden State Conference at County College of Morris and ranked in the top 15 among JUCO hitters in 2003.
