JERSEY CITY, NJ - The men's soccer team was down but never out, staging an impressive comeback to defeat Canisius 4-3 in Jersey City on Saturday. Although the men were trailing 3-1 heading into the 84th minute of play, the Peacocks were able to rack up three goals in the span of seven minutes to pull off a near-impossible victory in front of a home crowd.
Omar Seghiri,
Tom Coulson, and
Dominic Laws all put goals on the board to help the Peacocks secure the win.
Game Notes
- The match was sure to be a thriller from start to finish, with the first half finishing in a 1-1 tie with Canisius putting in a goal against Saint Peter's, and then putting in an own-goal to tie things up.
- The Golden Griffins took charge of things in the second half, scoring both in the 61st and 83rd minute to go ahead 3-1 in the final minutes of action.
- When it seemed that the Peacocks would never be able to catch the Griffs, Saint Peter's junior midfielder Alex Garcia would connect with freshman midfielder Omar Seghiri, who fired a shot above an outstretched Canisius goalkeeper at the 84' mark to bring the score to 3-2.
- Less than two minute later, Jordan Jowers lined up for a free kick along the goal line and chipped it into the box, where junior midfielder Tom Coulson was waiting to head the ball in to the upper right corner to even things up at 3-3.
- Although it seemed that the game would be heading into extra time, Saint Peter's was on a mission and would not be denied. With less than three minutes remaining on the clock, Coulson sent a ball to junior forward Dominic Laws, who would bury the ball high and in the center of the goal to put the Peacocks ahead 4-3 and give them the comeback victory.
Inside the Numbers
- The three second-half scores by the Peacocks came within four minutes of each other, which is the fastest scoring rate of the season for the men this year.
- Saturday's win marks the third straight conference win for Saint Peter's, and brings their conference record to 3-1-0.
- The men's 3-1 conference record is the team' best start to a MAAC season since 2015, when Saint Peter's saw wins against Quinnipiac, Rider, and Manhattan, with a loss to Marist.
- The match also marks the largest deficit the Peacocks have faced this year in which they have come back to win the match.
