Men’s Basketball Defeated by Providence Saturday

Peacocks lost 68-47 at Big East foe Providence

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Saint Peter's men's basketball team fell to 0-2 on the year following a 68-47 defeat at the hands of Providence College on Saturday afternoon. Freshman guard Matthew Lee led the way for the Peacocks with 10 points.

What Went Down
  • A mid-range jumper by Quinn Taylor in the game's opening possession would be Saint Peter's only lead of the day as the 2-0 advantage was succeeded by a 9-0 Providence run.
  • The Friars lead would grow to a 21-8 lead before Lee hit a deep triple, bringing the deficit to 10 points.
  • Providence was again able to extend its lead, this time jumping ahead by 15 (30-15) with about five minutes left in the half.
  • The Peacocks didn't let up, getting a bucket from Nazeer Bostick following a Friar turnover and a made 3-pointer by Daryl Banks III would bring the game within 10 points once more, resulting in a Providence timeout.
  • The Friars came out firing after that stoppage and used a 12-1 scoring run over the final 2:40 of the half to turn away the visitors' momentum and give the home side a 42-21 lead at the intermission.
  • In the first 20 minutes of play, Saint Peter's had 14 turnovers which Providence turned into 21 points.
  • From there on out, the Peacocks would not trim the deficit much closer than 20 points.
  • The closest the team would get was 18 points, that coming late in the game with under two minutes to play following a pair of free throws from Dallas Watson.
Inside the Numbers
  • Four of the five starters for Saint Peter's were making their first career starts, with three being freshmen in Lee, Banks, and Fousseyni Drame.

  • Bostick and Taylor scored six points each and Aaron Estrada pitched in with five points of his own.
  • Saint Peter's won the rebounding battle, grabbing a 36-34 rebounding edge. The Peacocks also converted 12 offensive rebounds into 10 second chance points.
  • The Peacocks have failed to score 50 points in consecutive losses for the first time since February 3 and 7 of 2013.
