Baseball Falls in Doubleheader to Iona

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's baseball team suffered setbacks in a MAAC doubleheader on Thursday to Iona College. The Peacocks fell 6-4 and 9-4 (7 innings) in the twin bill.
 
Game 1 Notes

• Iona put the first run of the game on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
• Saint Peter's responded in the bottom of the first with a run from Andrew Connor off of a Peter Ferony RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
• After no runs in the second by either team, Iona's Sam Punzi homered in the third to put Iona back up 2-1.
• The Gaels added four more runs in the fourth, extending their lead to 6-1.
• In the home half of the sixth inning, the Peacocks cut into the lead with a three run, four hit inning.
• With leadoff hitter Connor on second, Hunter Mason drove in the inning's first run with a single to left field.
• Ferony then reached on a fielder's choice, and eventually scored behind Jared Paladino's RBI single to right field.
• Jesse Matos then singled to center field for the RBI, scoring Paladino before the inning came to a halt.
• Both squads would fail to score another run, ending the game with a 6-4 Peacock defeat.
• Connor was 3-for-4 at the plate in the game, scoring two runs.
• Mason followed, going .500 at the plate with one RBI.
• Ferony and Paladino each posted a run and RBI, while Matos picked up the team's final RBI of the game.

 
Game 2 Notes

• Saint Peter's scored first in the second game, holding Iona to just one hit in the first inning before Paladino hit an RBI single to score Mason in the bottom of the frame.
• The Gaels scored seven runs over the next two innings to jump ahead of the Peacocks 7-1.
• In the fifth inning with two on, Jared Quintero sent a shot to left field, clearing the bases for a two-run single.
• An inning later, the Peacocks tacked on another run when Alex Slawinski scored from third on Mason's ground out to cut the deficit to 7-4.
• Iona added two insurance run in the seventh and final inning to secure the 9-4 victory over Saint Peter's.
• Connor had another stellar game, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk.
• Quintero batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Mason scored two runs with one RBI.
• Ferony and Slawinski both crossed home plate once, while Paladino added an RBI.

 
On Deck

• Saint Peter's and Iona will conclude the series tomorrow, May 17 at 1 p.m.
• The game will be the final one of the regular season for the Peacocks.
