EDISON, NJ – Saint Peter's University alumnus
Arthur Bertrand '19 has been awarded the Bob McClouskey Insurance (BMI) MAAC Postgraduate Scholar-Athlete Scholarship. Bertrand was a key member of the men's swimming and diving program for two seasons.
BMI provides annual postgraduate scholarships to two former student-athletes from the league's member institutions. The intent of the scholarships is to promote and encourage academically and athletically accomplished student-athletes to continue their education by attending graduate school.
"I feel very honored to be one of the recipients of the Bob McCloskey Insurance Scholarship," said Bertrand. "It rewards years of hard work in the pool and in the classroom. It also lifts weight from my shoulders as it helps me and my family financially."
"Arthur is well deserving of the BMI MAAC Postgraduate Scholar-Athlete Scholarship, as he is the true definition of a student-athlete and what this scholarship represents," said Interim Director of Athletics,
Katie Arcuri. "We are proud of Arthur."
Bertrand was an integral piece of the Saint Peter's men's swimming and diving teams that posted a combined meet record of 17-3 during the previous two seasons. A backstroker from France, Bertrand transferred to Saint Peter's in 2017-18 after two seasons at NAIA member West Virginia Tech. He was a three-time MAAC Championship medalist and member of the 2019 MAAC All-Academic Team.
Bertrand medaled once at the 2018 MAAC Championship in the 200 backstroke and twice during the 2019 MAAC Championship in the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke. During his two seasons in Jersey City, he won a number of races in the backstroke at a variety of meets and served as a leg on a number of relay teams for the Peacocks that boasted top-five performances.
Academically, Bertrand graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in International Business and Trade, finishing with a grade point average of 3.94 following the spring of 2019.
"Arthur has been a wonderful representative of what we want our student-athletes to achieve here at Saint Peter's, excelling in both the classroom and in his sport," said men's and women's swimming and diving head coach,
Mark Kretzer. "In just a few short years, he has become a school record holder and one of the most respected teammates I have ever coached. He is currently giving back to the swimming program by volunteering his free time assisting with our current team as he pursues his master's degree. This scholarship will certainly assist Arthur in his financial efforts to finish out his education here at Saint Peter's."
