Polishchuk to Compete at 2020 U.S. Open

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Redshirt junior Oleksiy Polishchuk of the Saint Peter's University men's swimming & diving program has had an interesting journey throughout his time in Jersey City, to say the least.

With his impressive credentials as an underclassman featuring several wins over his first two years, Polishchuk decided to utilize his junior season to train for the Long Course Meters Olympic Trials standards. However, the COVID-19 pandemic hindered his training.

"Oleksiy redshirted last season in an effort to focus his training towards attaining the Long Course Meters Olympic Trials standards last spring," said head coach Mark Kretzer. "This goal was unfortunately derailed by COVID, and he was unable to compete in a season-ending meet to achieve this goal."

Although his original plan didn't happen, Polishchuk was still able to make great strides and qualified to compete in the 2020 U.S. Open at the SwimRVA Aquatic Center in Richmond, Virginia, this weekend. Hosting some of the nation's best and most decorated swimmers, the U.S. Open gives swimming champions an opportunity to qualify for the 2021 Summer Olympic Trials.

"He returned this September in remarkable shape given the restrictions on pool training that COVID put on the sport," added Kretzer. "He has never been stronger, and he is absolutely in the best shape that I have ever seen him in. I have more confidence than ever that he can get those Olympic Trial cut times this weekend."

Polishchuk will be competing in the 100-meter breaststroke race at the Friday evening session (6pm) and in the 200 meter breaststroke race at the Saturday morning session (10am).
