EDISON, NJ - Redshirt senior Taiah Thornton and freshman Ajia James have been named this week's Hercules Tires Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league office today.
Thornton had a standout night on Wednesday, Nov. 25 against NJIT, recording her first career triple-double in the Peacocks' 69-64 overtime victory against the Highlanders. The Pennsauken native was running on all cylinders in last week's season opener, finishing with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and an impressive 11 steals, just shy of the program record of 13 set by Carolyn Gadsden against Dartmouth on Jan. 21, 1984. Thornton also tacked on two assists on the night, leading the Peacocks to their third consecutive season-opening win.
James started off her collegiate career about as strong as one could hope for, recording a double-double in her first outing as a Peacock in the team's 69-64 overtime victory against NJIT on Wednesday, Nov. 25. The freshman finished the night with 13 points and 10 rebounds, including six boards on the offensive end of the court. James also had the most playing time of any Saint Peter's player Wednesday night, recording 35 minutes in her first career start.
The Peacocks are set to take on St. John's tomorrow in a 2 p.m. start, and will travel south to Maryland this weekend as they prepare to take on Morgan State on Saturday, Dec. 5 in another 2 p.m. tip-off.
