As head coach Chris Stelma entered the fourth year overseeing the Saint Peter's University softball program, the pieces were all in place to propel the team to its best season since his arrival.
Despite a bumpy start to the season, the team was beginning to make incredible strides entering what would ultimately be the final week of campaign before the COVID-19 pandemic ultimately put an early stop to the spring. After traveling to California and Virginia for a pair of tournaments against a number of talented schools, the Peacocks started to build some momentum in early March, starting with the team's first win of the year against host Norfolk State during the Pirate Invitational in Virginia. Saint Peter's strung together a season-high eight runs in that victory, suggesting that their offense was primed to break out in the days ahead.
That would set the stage for what would ultimately be the high point of the young (and interrupted) season: a road trip to Baltimore to take on Coppin State University for a Wednesday (March 11) doubleheader. It was there and then that the Peacocks would ultimately put an exclamation point with their best performances to date, one that would help define a season that was showing the early indicators of being something truly special. Based on the team's noteworthy improvements with not even a third of the season complete; the program certainly appeared to be in line for its highest win total in recent memory.
