Top Moments: Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Coppin State

Saint Peter’s University Athletics enjoyed an incredibly successful 2019-20 academic year and was poised for even greater heights prior to the early cancelations of the winter and spring seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To honor the incredible student-athletes who made this past athletics season possible, we will look back at a number of milestone moments every week to celebrate 2019-20 to the fullest.

The Buildup to the Breakout

As head coach Chris Stelma entered the fourth year overseeing the Saint Peter's University softball program, the pieces were all in place to propel the team to its best season since his arrival.

Despite a bumpy start to the season, the team was beginning to make incredible strides entering what would ultimately be the final week of campaign before the COVID-19 pandemic ultimately put an early stop to the spring. After traveling to California and Virginia for a pair of tournaments against a number of talented schools, the Peacocks started to build some momentum in early March, starting with the team's first win of the year against host Norfolk State  during the Pirate Invitational in Virginia. Saint Peter's strung together a season-high eight runs in that victory, suggesting that their offense was primed to break out in the days ahead.

That would set the stage for what would ultimately be the high point of the young (and interrupted) season: a road trip to Baltimore to take on Coppin State University for a Wednesday (March 11) doubleheader. It was there and then that the Peacocks would ultimately put an exclamation point with their best performances to date, one that would help define a season that was showing the early indicators of being something truly special. Based on the team's noteworthy improvements with not even a third of the season complete; the program certainly appeared to be in line for its highest win total in recent memory.

How It Happened - Game 1

  • The Peacocks brought the bats out early that afternoon, as Saint Peter's put up three runs in the top of the opening frame off the efforts of Brandi Feeney, Alina Guevara, and Samantha Miller.
  • The Eagles didn't waste any time though, tying the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the first inning on four hits.
  • Saint Peter's would have another three-run inning in the top of the third, as Guevara and Alyssa Mido brought in runs from Feeney and Katie Sciglimpaglia. The Eagles then scored one run in the bottom of the third to bring the score to 6-4 in favor of the Peacocks.
  • The scoreboard remained unchanged until the top of the sixth, when Sciglimpaglia flied out to center field, bringing in Anja Solveig Kane in the process.
  • A two-run seventh inning from the Eagles would be too little too late for Coppin State, as Saint Peter's came out on top with a 7-6 victory.

How It Happened - Game 2

  • Saint Peter's did not lose any of its momentum heading into game two, exploding offensively in the first inning with six runs on the bats of Sciglimpaglia, Feeney, and Hartman, while some smart base running from Mido and Feeney secured another run.
  • Feeney tacked on another RBI in the third inning, bringing in classmate Cara McNulty to increase the Peacocks' lead to 7-0.
  • The Eagles got their first run of the day in the bottom of the third, but a two-run blast over the left field fence from Kane in the bottom of the fifth would seal the game for the Peacocks, taking the five-inning victory via a 9-1 margin.

Inside The Numbers

  • Kane's two-run home run in the second game of the day marks the sophomore's first of the year, bringing her RBI total up to four.
  • Wilson had her strongest showing of the season in game two against the Eagles, allowing just one run through five innings without allowing a single walk.
  • Miller batted a combined .750 through both games on Wednesday, while Alyssa Adams, Feeney, and Sciglimpaglia all finished the day batting .500 over the course of the two contests.
  • The Peacocks' 9-1 win marks the first early-stoppage victory for Saint Peter's this season.
We had a great day in Maryland today. We hit on all three cylinders with quality pitching, constant hitting and stellar defense. It's nice to see our hard work as a team translate to a performance like this. These young ladies are really something special and we are anxious to get back at it tomorrow.
