Ellis Picks Up Three Points; Men’s Soccer Ties Rider In Six-Goal Thriller Saturday Night

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ- The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team tied Rider University 3-3 on Saturday night. Sophomore forward Conlan Paventi, sophomore midfielder Matt Ellis and junior defender Tom Climpson scored for Saint Peter's.

Game Notes:

  • It was a dream start for the Peacocks, as sophomore forward Conlan Paventi scored in the 12th minute from a great assist from Ellis.
  • Less than two minutes later, Ellis decided to get on the score sheet himself, as he pounced on a turnover and converted from a tough angle.
  • Senior midfielder Jamie Davis had a great chance to add to the lead in the 19th minute, but his attempt was stopped.
  • Graduate goalkeeper Guillem Badenes Mecho made an unreal save in the 35th minute on a shot going into the top corner on his left side to keep the score at 2-0.
  • Rider scored from a free kick in the 40th minute to cut the deficit to one. The score would remain 2-1 at the break.
  • Rider came out of halftime and scored another in the 51st minute, also off of a free kick.
  • The Peacocks answered less than a minute later. Junior midfielder Fabian Schmid played a cross that was controlled and finished nicely by junior defender Tom Climpson to put the Peacocks back in front.
  • Rider answered Saint Peter's again, scoring in the 57th minute to tie the game at three.
  • Schmid had an attempt to the top right corner of the net in the 60th minute that was saved.
  • After a wild sixty minutes, things started to calm down. The score would remain tied 3-3 at the end of regulation.
  • Rider had the best chance of the first overtime period, but that attempt was not on target.
  • Neither team had an attempt on goal in the second overtime, as the score finished tied at 3-3.

Coach's Quotes: Julian Richens

  • High scoring MAAC game. Second away game we scored 3 goals - so that's a positive. We had a really good start in the first half and the free kick just before half time gave them some momentum going into the second half.
  • We had some changes to the line up today. First start and first collegiate goal for Conlan. First start and 110 minute game for Charlie Hare. Certainly a lot of positives.
  • Rider has some quality individual players so even though we are disappointed with not winning the game, coming off the difficult away trip in Buffalo, it was a great effort from the team to go to double OT and still be lively. You never know how important that point becomes.

Up Next:

  • The Peacocks continue conference play this Wednesday, October 20, when they return to Jersey City to face Niagara University. Kick off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
