JERSEY CITY, N.J. – A pair of transfer student-athletes making their Peacock debuts highlighted the Saint Peter's University cross country team's season-opening showing at the Peacock Invitational on a rainy Saturday morning at Lincoln Park.
Running their first race of what will be an abbreviated spring schedule, the Peacocks returned to action for their first official meet of the 2020-21 academic year and first in the cross country circuit since last November. First-year sophomore transfers
Francis Martingale and
Shelby Piccinic led all runners on the men's and women's side, respectively, in a race that featured local colleges New Jersey City University and Essex County Community College.
Martingale Paces Men's Performers
- A sophomore transfer who previously ran for UConn's cross country and track & field programs, Martingale led all runners in the 8K men's race by finishing in 19:17.72, averaging a sub-four mile (3:52.9).
- Redshirt sophomore Clardo Nestor was next in the rankings after crossing the finish line in 19:59.96, good for fifth place overall. Junior Michael Conover was three spots behind in eighth (20:52.17), while sophomore David Szaro rounded out the Saint Peter's top-four contingent in 11th place overall with a final time of 21:25.31.
- Three Peacocks rounded out spots 17-19 in the finish order, with rookie Phillip Reguinho, senior Rodolfo Cirilo and freshman Luis Santizo finishing consecutively.
Piccinic Shines in Peacock Debut
- Arriving after spending two years at Army West Point, Piccinic led a 10-person field on the women's side and won the 5K race in 15:13.29, averaging just under a five-minute mile (4:54.0).
- Sophomore Kaylah Davis picked up where she left off last year with a strong showing, placing third overall in 17:40.50 while averaging a 5:41.4 mile split.
- Sophomores Tola Osipitan and Grace Proctor were right behind Davis in fourth and fifth place, respectively, while redshirt junior Lovely Francois placed seventh.
- Finally, rookies Janai Orders and Ka'Rynn Hill rounded out the Peacock contingent in eighth and 10th place, respectively.

The Peacocks will head to Galloway, New Jersey, to take part in the 2020-21 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Cross Country Championship next Friday (March 5) at the Seaview Golf Club.
