Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Hands Quinnipiac its First Loss of 2020-21 in Overtime Thriller Monday Afternoon

Peacocks knock off undefeated Bobcats 3-2 in extra minutes

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team kept its momentum going on Monday afternoon, defeating first-place Quinnipiac via a 3-2 overtime decision. After the Peacocks were forced to play a man-down for 37 minutes in the second half following a straight red card in the 53rd minute, the Bobcats were able to draw the score to level with just 17 seconds left in regulation. The men persevered, however, winning the game in the 99th minute to remain undefeated as Quinnipiac now falls to 3-1 on the season.

Senior defender Anton Moore proved to be the hero of the day, burying the game winner in the waning seconds of the first overtime period off a double assist from classmate Tom Coulson and junior Jamie Davis. Davis had his own world-class goal just over 10 minutes into the second half, using the wind to bend in a corner kick from the near side to put the team up 2-1 at the time. For the second game in a row, senior Jordan Jowers converted on a pivotal penalty kick, this time banking a shot off the left post in the one-on-one with the Quinnipiac goalkeeper, which gave the Peacocks their first point on the board in the 12th minute.

Game Notes
  • The Peacocks were once again on the offensive attack from early on in Monday's affair, as Davis, along with seniors Dominic Laws and Marco Torino, each recorded a shot on goal within the first 10 minutes of action.
  • It would be Jowers' superb penalty kick at the 12' mark though, that gave Saint Peter's its first lead of the day and put them up 1-0 on the visiting Bobcats.
  • Quinnipiac staged its first complete attack in the 23rd minute, but senior goalkeeper Robbie Anderson was there to deny the attempt on goal.
  • A loose-ball situation in front of the Peacocks' goal 12 minutes later would create confusion, leading to Quinnipiac's first score of the day, which tied the game at 1-1.
  • A straight red card was dealt to sophomore Tom Climpson at the 53' mark, which left Saint Peter's shorthanded for the remainder of the bout.
  • It would not deter the Peacocks however, as Davis shaped a beautiful corner kick into the back of the net just four minutes later to regain a 2-1 lead.
  • Saint Peter's played conservatively for the remainder of regulation, looking to keep the Quinnipiac offense at bay until the final whistle.
  • The Bobcats would not go down without a fight though, scoring the equalizer with just 17 seconds left in the second half to force extra minutes in Jersey City.
  • However, Saint Peter's would not be discouraged, and fought with tenacity in the first overtime period, eventually securing a free kick from Davis.
  • The ball was sent into the box and was then headed by Coulson to Moore who, off the volley, sent it past the Quinnipiac keeper for a dramatic win on the team's home turf.
Inside the Numbers
  • Moore's golden goal marked the first score of the senior defender's career at Saint Peter's, consequently marking his first game winner as well.
  • Jowers now stands at 8-8 in his career in penalty kicks and has tallied three successful conversions thus far in 2020-21.
  • Davis finishes the day with one goal and one assist, marking his first career outing in which he tallied one of each.
  • Anderson has now recorded 5+ saves on 10 different occasions throughout his career as a Peacock.
  • Redshirt freshmen Roodlenscky Charles and Brian Neves each make their first collegiate appearances against the Bobcats on Monday, playing 20 minutes and two minutes, respectively.
  • The victory marks the first win for the Peacocks over the Bobcats in more than five years, as Saint Peter's last triumph in the series came in a 2-0 decision in Hamden on September 26, 2015.
  • The past two games between the programs have led to extra minutes, as Quinnipiac took a narrow 2-1 win in double overtime in last year's conference opener on October 2, 2019.
Coach's Quotes - Julian Richens
  • "A game full of real desire and character today. It's hard enough playing an organized and well-coached Quinnipiac side with 11 players let alone going down a man after 52 minutes."
  • "Our senior group showed their experience. Delighted for Anton to score his first collegiate goal as an overtime winner."
  • "We had good contributions from Rood and Brian Neves playing their first collegiate minutes today. We are going to need everyone in our squad if we are going to continue to pick up points."
Up Next
  • The Peacocks will hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to Loudonville, New York for a tilt against Siena on Thursday, April 1 at 3 p.m.
