Softball Drops Doubleheader at Siena on Sunday in Loudonville

Peacocks lose weekend road series against Saints

LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Saint Peter's University softball team fell in the second installment of its road series at Siena on Sunday, dropping both games of its twin bill against the Saints by a score of 7-2 in the first game, and a narrow 3-2 decision in Game 2.

Junior Katie Sciglimpaglia highlighted the Peacocks' performance on the day, registering an RBI in each of the two games. Sophomore pitchers Taylor Rondon and Kristen Brennan had strong outings in their relief efforts on the mound, as Rondon conceded just one run through the last three innings of Game 1, while Brennan held the Saints scoreless through the final three frames of Game 2.

Game 1 Notes:
  • The Saints got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and would maintain the one-point advantage until the third frame.
  • Sciglimpaglia was able to tie the game in the top of the third with an RBI single to center field, which brought in the run by junior Anja Solveig Kane.
  • The Siena offense turned it on in the bottom of the third though, and five more runs for the Saints before the inning's final out would grant the hosts a 6-1 lead.
  • Saint Peter's quickly got one back, as sophomore Cara McNulty scored on an error from the Siena defense in the top of the fourth to narrow the gap to 6-2.
  • Another Siena run in the bottom of the sixth would seal the deal, as the Saints went on to take the 7-2 victory.
Game 2 Notes:
  • Siena was able to take an early lead again in Sunday's rematch, going up 3-0 after three innings, which included a two-run third inning.
  • Saint Peter's would not go away easily, though, and Sciglimpaglia picked up her second RBI of the day in the top of the fifth, reaching first on a fielder's choice while bringing Kane in for the score.
  • Another Siena error on the next at-bat would open the lane for another run from the Peacocks, as junior Melissa Morales reached home to bring the score to 3-2.
  • That would be the last run scored for either side in Game 2, however, as each team went three-and-out in the sixth, followed by a one-hit seventh inning for the Peacocks.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Sciglimpaglia now leads the team in runs batted in on the season, finishing Sunday with three RBI's through six games played.
  • Kane paces the team in runs scored on the year, bringing her season tally up to three after recording a run in each of Sunday's contests.
  • Morales finished the day with the team's lone multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 at the plate in Game 2.
  • Each side accounted for five hits during Game 2, but the Saints left just two players on base through the seven innings compared to five from the Peacocks.
Coach's Quotes - Chris Stelma:
  • "Real good day of ball today. We put the ball in play and got quality innings out of 4 different pitchers."
  • "We are excited to get back at the Shack on Wed."
Up Next:
  • The Peacocks make their return to the Garden State for a doubleheader against hOURglass rival Rider on Wednesday, April 14. The games are slotted for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. starts.
