First Serve
  • Saint Peter's women's volleyball returns to the court this weekend, traveling to Loretta, Pennsylvania for the Red Flash Classic Presented by Altoona Grand Hotel.
  • The Peacocks will take on host Saint Francis University (SFU), Georgetown of the Big East, and Delaware State.
  • SPU enters the multi-team tournament 0-4, after dropping a road contest to in-state foe NJIT on Tuesday.
  • Despite falling in straight sets, the Peacocks played in a highly competitive match losing (23-25, 21-25, 20-25).
  • Offensively, the team is led by upper class attackers Alanis Alvarado and Angeleyshka Curbelo in kills and in assists by graduate Wildalys Soto.
  • Defensively, the underclass players are leading the flock with sophomore Alwen Pila leading the team in digs and freshman Suzzanne Bigelow the team leader in blocks.
Things to Know Before the Red Flash Classic
Series History vs. the Field
  • Saint Peter's is a combined 9-8 all-time against its Red Flash Classic opponents.
  • Versus invitational host, SFU, the Peacocks are 4-1 after meeting the Red Flash five straight seasons from 1991 through 1995.
  • The Peacocks won the past two meetings, taking the last match 3-2 during the 1995 campaign.
  • Georgetown is the only team at the classic that SPU has not had success against, falling in the only two matches between the two sides in 2003 and 2004.
  • SPU and Delaware State are an even 5-5 all-time against each other.
  • This will be the second meeting of the season between the two, having first met in the season-opener of the DSU Hornet Invite where Del. St. came away with a 3-0 win.
Scouting the Opposition
  • This weekend's invitational will be the second of the season for Saint Peter's and the field, with all four teams having played in a season-opening tournament last weekend.
  • Host SFU is winless, dropping all three games in the Youngstown State Invitational and a road game at Kent State on Tuesday to start the year.
  • Big East Conference member Georgetown is 1-2, coming off of a sweep over George Washington in the final game of the DC Challenge.
  • Delaware State is the lone team in the field with a winning record, going a perfect 3-0 at its own DSU Hornet Invite last weekend.
Big Blocks
  • Following the first week of the season, first year middle blocker Suzzanne Bigelow posted one of the best block outputs in the nation and the top marks in the MAAC.
  • The rookie from Glendale, AZ amassed 11 total blocks (8 ba, 3 bs), logging a 1.57 blocks per set average through three games, both of which ranked first in the conference.
  • Nationally, Bigelow ranked fourth among NCAA freshmen in blocks per set and 40th overall after week one.
  • No other player in the MAAC surpassed double figure blocks in the opening week.
  • Bigelow currently sits at 15.0 total blocks after adding four block assists against NJIT on Tuesday.
Up Next
  • The Peacocks return to the tri-state area next week, traveling to nearby St. Francis Brooklyn for a road match on Wednesday, September 8 at 7pm.
