Softball Splits Doubleheader on Final Day of Rutgers Softball Tournament

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 20, 2022) - The Saint Peter's university softball team defeated Holy Cross 8-5 and lost to Stony Brook 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.

Top Performers

  • Kasidy Slusser batted in four RBI's, hit a two run home run, and scored two runs on the day.
  • Maiah Skakal had three hits, scored two runs, and had two RBI's.
  • Cara McNulty recorded three hits in game two.
  • Olyvia Smith recorded three hits, batted in a run, and scored a run.

How It Happened (Game One: Stony Brook)

  • Stony Brook struck first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Peacocks tied it up in the third inning after Smith doubled to score Aubrey Ketcham.
  • Skakal hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to put the Peacocks in front.
  • Stony Brook scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Still down by three in the seventh, Brandi Feeney hit a single to get on base. Slusser then hit a two run home run to cut the deficit to one. Saint Peter's was unable to score the tying run and fell in Game 1.

How It Happened (Game Two: Holy Cross)

  • Holy Cross scored first in the second game on the day, tacking on two runs in the top of the first.
  • Saint Peter's took the lead themselves in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs. Cara McNulty, Katie Sciglimpaglia and Dakota Pitts all scored off of errors.
  • The Peacocks scored again in the second after McNulty hit an RBI single to score Olyvia Smith.
  • The Crusaders scored two runs in the third inning.
  • Anja Solveig Kane stole home in the fourth inning to put the Peacocks back in front.
  • Slusser extended the Peacocks lead in the fourth inning, hitting a two RBI single to score Maiah Skakal and Dakota Pitts.
  • Holy Cross tried to rally in the seventh, but they only scored one run as the Peacocks ended their five game losing streak.

From the Dugout (Head Coach Chris Stelma)

  • We have been extremely happy with the way we played this weekend. It is a great feeling to be above .500. Taylor Rondon came into both games and absolutely shoved in relief.  
  • We had a big day with the bat today including 3 home runs. We are looking forward to the start of conference play to show everyone we're not the same Peacocks.

Next Up

  • The Peacocks return to action Tuesday afternoon as they head to Fairfield, CT for a matchup with Sacred Heart. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
