NEWARK, NJ. - The Saint Peter's men's basketball team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season in dominant fashion over NJIT (0-2) 75-48. Four Peacocks finished in double figures led by
Corey Washington's career-high 23 points. Washington shot 7/13 FG and 3-5 from three. Additionally, Washington grabbed 10 rebounds and notched his first-career double-double.
Marcus Randolph scored 11 points while
Latrell Reid and
Michael Houge each dropped 10. This marked the second consecutive game Houge and Reid have scored in double figures.
On the defensive end, the Peacocks held the Highlanders scoreless until the 13:51 mark in the first half. Washington sparked SPU offensively in the first 20 minutes as he scored nine straight points for the Peacocks. The SPU sophomore hit a mid-range jump shot which extended the Peacocks' lead to 16-6 with 10:02 left in the first half. Washington closed out the first half with a three-pointer as time expired. SPU led NJIT 38-25 at halftime.
In the second half, the Peacocks continued to cruise. A pair of free throws from the Highlanders cut the Peacocks' lead to 11. Saint Peter's responded with a 16-0 run that featured a jump shot and a putback dunk from Houge. The Saint Peter's second-half run built the Peacocks' lead to 63-36. With under a minute in the game, Armoni Ziegler finished a Peacocks fast break with a layup, which stamped the victory at 75-48.
Mouhamed Sow tallied a season-high 10 rebounds. The Peacocks generated 18 points off turnovers and 22 more second-chance points than NJIT. Saint Peter's bench outscored NJIT's 33-14.
Next, the Saint Peter's men's basketball travels to FDU for the "Battle of the Bracket Busters" on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Tip-off is at 7 PM and the game will broadcast live on the YES Network.
