JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's Women's Basketball team had an outstanding performance Saturday afternoon, winning their conference opener against Marist at home by a score of 51-42.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman forward Fatmata Janneh continued to open the floor as she has done all season long. During the first five minutes of the first half, she had a total of six points. She finished the game with her fourth career double-double, scoring 14 points and 17 rebounds. At the 7:47 mark of the first quarter, Janneh had a fast break from a turnover in the paint, driving to make a layup. Both teams held each other at bay offensively in the first quarter, leaving the score tied at eight.
Sophomore guard Jada Leonard, who finished the game with a total of 13 points, started off the second quarter with a layup, giving the Peacocks the lead. Sophomore Reilly Sunday had a second chance in the paint, making a layup to push the lead to 12-9. Closing out the second quarter, Graduate Student Mikia Keith scored from beyond the 3-point arc. Keith shot 2-of-3 in three pointers for the game. At halftime, the score was 18-14.
Graduate Student forward Maria Fux was efficient on Saturday afternoon, shooting 2-of-3 from beyond the three point arc and totaling nine points. Right before the end of the third quarter, she made a 3-pointer giving the Peacocks a 10 point lead and never looked back.
Saint Peter's pulled down 43 rebounds as a team in Saturday's game. The team had a total of nine steals courtesy of Leonard, Janneh, Fux, Senior guard Rachel Kuhl, Keith, Sunday and Graduate Student guard Maya Hyacienth.
