BALTIMORE, MD. - The Saint Peter's Softball team picked up its first win of the season at UMBC on Friday. The Peacocks split Friday's double header, and Dakota Pitts tallied her 100th career-hit.
Game one - Saint Peter's 6 | UMBC 5 in nine innings.
The Peacocks took down the defending American East champions UMBC 6-5 in nine innings. Saint Peter's came back from down 4-0 in the fourth inning. In the top of the sixth inning, SPU junior Jess Forte blasted a two-run home run over left field. For Forte, it was her eighth career homerun. Down 4-2, the Peacocks took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. With runners on first and third, Sophie Wilson hit an RBI single up the middle which brought in Zailees Seda. Taylor Montgomery scored on a throwing error by UMBC. Pitts hit an RBI single to left field which gave the Peacocks a 5-4 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Retrievers capitalized on a throwing error and tied up the game at 5-5.
In the top of the ninth inning, Cara McNulty singled to left field. Pitts followed up with her 100th hit. Pitts delivered a single to left field which advanced McNulty to second base. McNulty moved to third base after a fly out. Saint Peter's senior Maiah Skakal brought in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the ninth the Peacocks turned a double play and UMBC grounded out for the third out. Pitts went 3-4 at the plate with one run and one RBI. This is the first win of the season for the Peacocks. Additionally, it's the first win for Saint Peter's over UMBC since 2014.
Game two - UMBC - 9 | Saint Peter's - 1 in 6 innings
The Retrievers put up 19 hits, five doubles, and two home runs. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Taylor Montgomery scored on a throwing error. The Peacocks dropped to 1-3 on the season.
Next, the Saint Peter's Softball team travels to Princess Anne, Maryland for a double header at University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday, Feb. 22.
