Men's Basketball Takes Down Marist 69-60 For Fourth Consecutive Win

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's Men's Basketball team (15-11, 11-6 MAAC) earned its fourth consecutive win Sunday at Run Baby Run Arena. The Peacocks defeated Marist (14-10, 9-6 MAAC) 69-60 on Sunday. 

Corey Washington scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed a team-high five rebounds, with one steal. Roy Clarke scored 12 points, with three rebounds and one assist, Marcus Randolph scored 11 points (4-8FG, 2-4 3PT), along with one rebound. SPU senior Latrell Reid dropped 10 points and distributed a team-high seven assists, with four rebounds, one block, and one steal. Mouhamed Sow scored five points, grabbed five rebounds, and had a season-high three blocks with three steals. 

The score was tied eight times, and the game featured six lead changes. The  Peacocks overcame an eight-point halftime deficit and pulled away at the end of the second half. 

Marist's Jackson Price led the Red Foxes with 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists. The Red Foxes shot 50% from the field in the first half (11-22) but finished 15-45 (33.3%) in the game 15-45 (33.3%) from the field. 

SPU snapped Marist's five-game winning streak. With the win, the Peacocks moved up to third in the MAAC standings behind Quinnipiac (19-8, 11-5 MAAC) and Fairfield (16-10, 10-5 MAAC). 

How it happened

  • Marist shot 50% from the field in the first half.  Down 9-5, Brent Bland knocked down two three-pointers in consecutive possessions and tied the game at 11-11. Bland finished the game (2-2) (100%) from three-point range. 

  • The game was tied at 16-16 before Marist scored five straight. Randolph scored five straight points for the Peacocks. After a three-pointer and a floater in the paint, the game was tied at 21-21. 

  • At the 4:59 mark, Reid assisted Armoni Zeigler on a fastbreak, and the game was tied at 26-26. 

  • In the final five minutes of the first half, Marist outscored SPU 12-4. Marist's Josh Pascarelli made a three-pointer with 1:07 left, and Marist led 38-30 at halftime. 

  • Marist's Jackson Price scored a layup, which extended the Red Foxes lead to 49-39 at the 13:05 mark. The Peacocks answered back with a 7-0 run. The run featured a bucket and-one from Randolph, and free throws from Reid and Washington. The Peacocks trailed 49-46 with 9:05 left. 

  • Marist went up 53-48 after a pair of free throws. The Peacocks responded with six straight points. Reid drove to the basket and scored a layup, which gave the SPU a 55-53 advantage. 

  • With 3:24 left in the game, Washington completed a four-point play. The SPU sophomore drained a perimeter three-pointer and got fouled. After his free throw, the Peacocks led 59-54.  

  • Marist cut the deficit to four with 2:21 left. Reid distributed his seventh assist to  Mouhamed Sow in the paint for a layup, which extended the Peacock's lead to 63-57. Free throws from Reid and Bland closed out the game at 69-60. 

Inside The Numbers 

  • The game was a free throw feast as both teams took 30+. Marist went 24-30, and SPU went 23-37.

  • Saint Peter's had seven steals in the game and scored 12 points off turnovers. 

  • After shooting 50% in the first half, the Red Foxes made four field goals in the second half. 

  • Clarke scored in double figures for the eighth time this season. 

  • Randolph has shot over 50% from three-point range during SPU's four-game winning streak. 

  • The Peacocks are 14-6  when they've held opponents to under 70 points this season.
