ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - The stage is set for the 2024 MAAC Tournament Championship. The Saint Peter's Men's Basketball team (17-13, 12-8 MAAC) squares off against Fairfield (24-8, 15-5 MAAC) at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall. The game tips off at 7:30 PM and will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
Overview
The Peacocks took down the No. 1 seed Quinnipiac Bobcats in a thrilling 62-60 victory. In the game's final possession, Mouhamed Sow grabbed a pivotal rebound and scored the game-winning bucket at the buzzer. Sow scored a team-high 15 points, six rebounds, and four blocks. Saint Peter's held the Bobcats to a season-low 60 points. Saint Peter's is currently ranked 12th in scoring defense (63.6 points per game). In the MAAC Tournament, SPU has held opponents to 54 points per game. The Peacocks are 10-0 this season when opponents score under 60 points.
The Stags seek their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1997. No. 2 Fairfield defeated No. 3 Marist 65-62 on Friday. Fairfield guard Caleb Fields scored 22 points, with four assists and two rebounds. All-MAAC First-Team honoree Jalen Leach tallied 13 points, with five rebounds, and two assists. Fairfield forward Brycen Goodine was named the MAAC Sixth Man of the Year. Goodine averaged 14.6 points per game.
The Peacocks look for their second MAAC Tournament Championship in three years and fifth in school history.
All-MAAC Honors
Corey Washington earned All-MAAC First Team honors on Monday. The SPU sophomore had a breakout season for the Peacocks. Washington leads the Peacocks in scoring with 16.8 points per game and rebounding (6.4 rpg). The SPU standout has scored 20+ points in nine games and tallied four double-doubles on the year. The last Saint Peter's Men's Basketball player to make the All-MAAC First Team was KC Ndefo for the 2021-22 season.
Latrell Reid was awarded the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. The New Jersey native averaged 11.4 ppg and 4.2 rebounds per game (third in the MAAC). Reid started in every game for the Peacocks this season and tallied two double-doubles. This marks the fourth year out of the last five that a Saint Peter's student-athlete has been named MAAC Defensive Player of the Year. Ndefo won the award three consecutive times (2020-2022).
