PROVIDENCE, RI – The Saint Peter's University volleyball team kicked off their weekend at the 19th annual Friar Classic on Friday. Despite a standout performance by sophomore Maliyah Labrie, who led all players with 18 kills, the Peacocks (1-1) fell in a hard-fought four-set match against Providence (3-3).
Match Summary:
- Providence set the pace early, maintaining a steady lead throughout the first set. Saint Peter's battled back to tie the score 20-20, then seized the momentum by winning five of the last six points to take the first set 25-21.
- In set two, Saint Peter's took an early lead, but Providence quickly regained control and held the advantage to win 25-18.
- The Peacocks started strong in set three, jumping out to a 12-4 lead. However, Providence rallied with ten consecutive points to take the lead and ultimately the set 25-28.
- Set four mirrored the first, with Providence leading for much of the set. Saint Peter's rallied to tie it at 20-20 and held set point, but Providence fought back, leveling the score at 25-25 and closing out the match with a 28-26 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- Maliyah Labrie had 18 kills and 22.5 points
- Leagan Colon had 23 digs
- Penelope Rivera Morales had 10 kills and four blocking assists
- Valeria Krystal Pagan Munoz had eight kills and four blocking assists
- Skye Graham had five kills on 10 attempts, hitting .400 on the day.
The Peacocks will be back in action for the conclusion of the Friar Classic. On Saturday Sept 14, Saint Peter's University faces Stonehill College at 9AM and Columbia University at 1PM.
