BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Saint Peter's men's basketball team took down Canisius 62-49 at the Koessler Athletic Center Sunday afternoon to secure its first conference victory of the season.
"I'm extremely happy and excited, not for me, but more so for these guys," head coach
Bashir Mason stated after the win. "They've been working really hard, and we've got into a little bit of a rut and this is a tough trip so for us to be able to finish it off with a win is exciting."
The Peacocks (6-7, 1-4 MAAC) outlasted the Golden Griffins (1-15, 1-4 MAAC) behind
Marcus Randolph's 19 points. He sparked the offense early in the game with a pair of 3-pointers and seemed to have the hot hand throughout the contest. Randolph finished 5-of-14 from the field while shooting 40.0 percent from long range.
Saint Peter's dominated the glass this afternoon, recording 44 total rebounds compared to Canisius' 23. The Peacocks scored 10 second-chance points which were created by 13 offensive boards.

After the timeout, Canisius chipped away at the deficit to come within five at 8-13, but back-to-back layups by the Peacocks put them back up by nine. Tana Kopa brought life to the Griffs as he hit two 3-pointers to make it 14-17.
With under eight minutes to go in the first half, Morris found the bottom of the net on a pass from Eaton. Randolph then hit yet another 3-pointer as the Peacocks held a 24-14 advantage over the Griffs.

Approaching the 11-minute mark, the Griffs converted an AND-1 layup as SPU called a timeout while leading 42-35. Sow hit a free throw for the Peacocks, but Canisius responded with a 3 to cut its deficit down to five. Saint Peter's answered right back as Eaton hit a shot from downtown.
An 8-1 run elevated the Peacocks to a 51-39 lead with nine minutes to go in regulation.
