MILFORD, CT– The Saint Peter's swimming and diving programs competed at Sacred Heart's Friendsgiving Duals Saturday afternoon. The women's team fell to MAAC opponents Sacred Heart (204–73) and Merrimack (162–112), but defeated non-conference opponent Bridgeport (204–73), while the men's team dropped their contest to Bridgeport, 195–79.
Both squads produced multiple podium finishes, highlighted by gold medals from
Madison Petricevic in the 100 backstroke and
Juan Nunez in the 200 backstroke.
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
In the 200 medley relay, Saint Peter's claimed two of the top three spots. SPU A– Nunez,
Victor Fuentes, Tristan Raso, and Ashton Smith– finished second in 1:37.86, while the rookie squad of
Austin Carducci, Ean Vellescig, Nikita Kaminskas, and
Jeff Thompson followed in 1:40.68.
MAAC Rookie of the Week
Patch Robinson earned silver in the 1000 freestyle (9:58.68). In a tight 200 freestyle, Nunez secured bronze in a personal-best time of 1:46.40.
Carducci earned bronze in the 100 backstroke (54.82). Fuentes and Vellescig went 2-3 in the 100 breaststroke, with Fuentes just .42 off first (58.82) and Vellescig posting a personal best (1:00.23).
Thompson prevented a Bridgeport sweep in the 50 freestyle, placing second (23.01), and added bronze in the 100 freestyle (50.36).
Nunez delivered the men's lone gold of the meet, dominating the 200 backstroke in 1:54.56, a new personal best.
Vellescig and Fuentes added another 2-3 finish in the 200 breaststroke, with Vellescig hitting a personal best (2:12.17) and Fuentes recording a season best (2:14.06). Nunez collected his third medal of the day with bronze in the 500 freestyle (4:50.07).
Raso took second in the 100 butterfly (52.75). Robinson and Vellescig earned silver and bronze in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:00.17 and 2:01.58.
The 200 freestyle relay of Thompson, Nunez, Robinson, and Carducci swam to a third-place finish, touching the wall in 1:31.42.
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
The 200 medley relay squad of Petricevic,
Gwendolyn Mendez, Paige Austin-Burrows, and Maddie McKinney opened the meet on the women's side with a silver in 1:50.70.
Austin-Burrows swam to a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in 2:00.25, hitting a new personal best.
Petricevic earned the women's lone gold of the meet with a thrilling win in the 100 backstroke, out-touching second place by .02 to post a season-best 59.95. Mendez added bronze in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.32), preventing a Sacred Heart sweep.
Austin-Burrows earned another bronze in the 200 butterfly (2:18.52). Petricevic picked up her second medal of the day with bronze in the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 25.78, a new season best.
Francesca Solano Vargas recorded a season best in the 200 backstroke, placing second in 2:14.73. Austin-Burrows swam to another silver finish, hitting a new season best in the 200 IM in 2:15.05.
The 200 freestyle relay of
Eloise Schirtzinger, Mendez, Petricevic, and Austin-Burrows closed the meet with a bronze in 1:43.80.
