NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Saint Peter's baseball team picked up its 10th win of the season with a 7-6 victory over Merrimack Sunday afternoon at Warrior Baseball Diamond.
The Peacocks (10-28, 5-15 MAAC) outhit the Warriors (13-28-1, 9-15 MAAC) 11-to-8 and managed to fend off a Merrimack comeback attempt late in the game to seal the deal on the road.
John Wade,
Garrett Greco and
Tommy Kendrick each notched two hits on the day for Saint Peter's. Wade led the way with a solo homer in the third inning, putting the Peacocks up 4-2.
Mike DiForte had a solid performance on the mound as he pitched 7.1 innings while allowing just three earned runs. He finished the game letting up seven hits through 35 batters faced.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors struck first with a double in the opening inning that scored two runs early. The Peacocks responded with a run by
Logan Baker on a wild pitch in the top of the second to make it 1-2.
The third and fourth innings were crucial for Saint Peter's. With
Ashby Vining and Kendrick on base,
Tyler Cotten hit a double to score both runners, giving the Peacocks first lead of the day at 3-2.
Shortly after in the fourth inning, Wade hit a homer to extend the SPU advantage to two runs. Greco then hit a single as
Tyler DeClusin managed to make it home for a 5-2 Saint Peter's lead.
DiForte continued to be a factor on the mound as he allowed zero runs from the beginning of the second inning all the way through the bottom of the seventh.
The Peacocks took a commanding 7-2 lead in the sixth inning after scoring two runs on the Warriors. Merrimack started to make a comeback in the eighth inning, putting up two runs to make it 4-7.
In the ninth,
Kurt Thomas finished things off in North Andover. He regained his composure after letting up two runs as the Warriors came within one at 6-7 and was able to get the last out with a groundout.
