JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University baseball team fell to Mount St. Mary's in a 5-7 game on Saturday at Jaroschak Field, leaving just two games left at home for the Peacocks.
The Peacocks (11-32, 5-19 MAAC) opened the series against the Mountaineers (20-27, 12-13 MAAC) with a close defeat despite Saint Peter's totaling 10 hits compared to Mount St. Mary's eight.
Tommy Kendrick and
Alex Rakas each recorded two hits on the day. Other Peacocks to notch a hit were
Garrett Greco,
Ashby Vining,
Tyler Smith,
Tyler DeClusin,
Luke Schwartz and
Sean Martinez.
The Peacocks came within one of the Mountaineers twice in the game but couldn't complete the comeback in game one of the series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Peter's trailed starting in the top of the second when Mount St. Mary's hit a sacrifice-fly to go up, 1-0. The Mountaineers then extended their lead to two runs in the third on a walk with the bases loaded. The Peacocks escaped the inning with a flyout to Greco in center field.
DeClusin made it a one-run game again after making it home on a throwing error. In the fourth inning, Mount St. Mary's added two runs for a 4-1 lead over the Peacocks. Saint Peter's responded with two runs of its own over the next two innings to make it 3-4.
In the sixth, the Mountaineers started to pull away with two more runners brought home for a 6-3 advantage. The Peacocks shortened their deficit to two after getting walked with the bases loaded.
Later in the game, Smith crushed a ball to right field and over the fence as Saint Peter's trailed by just one heading into the ninth inning. Mount St. Mary's then hit a homer in the top of the ninth before recording three outs in the field for the 7-5 win.

The Peacocks and Mountaineers will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. ET. The Senior Day ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m.
