Saint Peter’s Falls In Heartbreaker To Marist

Peacocks Punch Their Ticket To Atlantic City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team was defeated in a heartbreaker to the Marist Red Foxes on Thursday, Feb. 26 by a score of 45-48. 

The Peacocks showed up and showed out early for their final home contest of the year, putting up 17 points in the first quarter. Carys Roy finished as the leading scorer with 13 points. Nikola Zdenkova also with a double digit scoring performance of 11 points including a trifecta of 3-pointers. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER:
Roy started the game off attacking inside to score the first basket for Saint Peter's. De'Naya Rippey followed the basket up with a layup of her own to score the second basket for the Peacocks. Roy added another basket to her total on another layup in the paint. With a 6-2 start for the Peacocks, more baskets came from a pair of layups by Eszter Turi and Layla Laws before a deep triple by Zdenkova. Roy finished out the first quarter scoring the last two baskets for Saint Peter's to end with a lot of momentum in a 17-6 score after one. 

SECOND QUARTER: Laws knocked down the first basket in the second quarter on a long range triple. Roy knocked down another basket inside on a spinning hook shot to give the Peacocks a 22-13 lead halfway through. Rippey kept the scoring going for Saint Peter's on another strong layup inside. Zdenkova knocked down a deep triple from the corner in response to a Red Fox triple from the arc. Reilly Sunday later scored with an incredible floater to get the final basket for Saint Peter's in the first half to head into the buzzer with a 29-21 lead. 

THIRD QUARTER: Rippey opened up the second half with a deep distance triple. The Red Foxes kept up the defensive effort throughout the quarter to hold the Peacocks to a 32-25 score at the media timeout. The drought continued as Marist tied the contest up at 32-32 until Roy broke the streak to keep the lead in the hands of Saint Peter's to enter the fourth quarter in a 34-32 score to enter the fourth quarter. 

FOURTH QUARTER: Louella Allana earned the first points for Saint Peter's at the free throw line. Allana kept the scoring coming for Saint Peter's on a triple from outside before Zdenkova erupted the home crowd with a triple of her own. Zdenkova added another basket on a pull up mid range jumper to take a 44-43 lead with four minutes to go. The Red Foxes took the lead right back with just under two minutes left the score sat at 44-45. Roy tied it back up at 45 before another layup inside gave the Red Foxes the lead with around 30 seconds left. And following a layup and free throw by Marist, the final buzzer sounded as the Peacocks finished the contest in defeat by a score of 45-48. 

UP NEXT: Saint Peter's will travel on the road to Manhattan on Saturday, Feb. 28 for the final contest before the MAAC tournament begins on Mar. 5
