Strong Second Half Falls Short As Saint Peter’s Drops Tough Battle To Siena

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team was defeated in a tough clash with the Siena Saints 62-75 on Thursday, Feb. 5 at Run Baby Run arena in Jersey City, N.J.

Despite the tough loss, the Peacocks managed to have a few genuine high points. Carys Roy was fantastic, leading Saint Peter's in scoring for the second straight game with another 20 point performance to go along with leading the team in rebounds with four. Louella Allana provided a true selfless performance, dishing out a team best and season high nine assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER:
Nikola Zdenkova got the scoring going for the Peacocks, knocking down the first triple of the game. Following a pair of triples from the Saints, De'Naya Rippey drove inside the lane and scored following a perfectly placed pass from Allana. After a layup in response by the Saints, the contest went scoreless for two minutes before a pair of three point baskets from Laila Grant and Layla Laws woke the Peacock crowd up to head into the media timeout with a 11-10 lead. Coming out of the timeout, it was Siena who took control, going on an eight point run to take the lead right back. After a lone free throw by Roy with a few seconds left, the first quarter ended with Saint Peter's behind 12-18.

SECOND QUARTER: After a few minutes of a scoreless and defensive heavy start to the second quarter, Grant cashed in on a pair of free throws before Rippey added on top with a triple from downtown coming out of a media timeout. The duo of Roy and Rippey went to work and both scored by attacking down low in the paint. With around two minutes left in the first half, the Peacocks found themselves down 21-28 to Siena. Fortunately for Saint Peter's luck struck as the Peacocks went on an 8-3 run to end the first half, all of the baskets scored inside, and scored by Roy and a last second basket from Eszter Turi to shorten the deficit to a 29-33 score at end of the first half.

THIRD QUARTER: Siena jumped out fast in the second half, scoring nine straight points to begin the third. After a layup inside by Roy, Saint Peter's entered the media timeout down 31-42, Rippey responded by scoring on a tough shot inside and Turi added another basket for good measure. After a pair of jumpers by the Saints, the Peacocks went on their own run, scoring 10 points and only allowing one to end the third quarter. Roy contributed with a basket inside and then a pair of free throws, and followed up by a pair of triples from Allana and Laws, to end the third quarter with a 45-56 score.

FOURTH QUARTER: Roy started the final quarter with a basket inside to give the Peacocks their first bucket. Unfortunately, the Saints responded by going on a six point run, ultimately ended by a free throw from Roy and a 3-pointer by Reilly Sunday. Halfway through the fourth quarter, Saint Peter's fell behind Siena 51-66. Another triple by Zdenkova led to another triple from Rippey and then Jada Mills added a triple on top for good measure. Following a layup inside by Roy, the Peacocks had scored 11 points in just two minutes. However, it was not enough to take down Siena as the Saints held the Peacocks scoreless in the final two minutes, leading to the final tally of 62-75.

UP NEXT: The Peacocks will head onto the road on Saturday, Feb. 7 against Marist at 2 pm.
