Army Pulls Away Early, Holds Off Saint Peter’s Rally

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Saint Peter's baseball team fell to Army by a final score of 4-9 at Doubleday Field on Tuesday. The Peacocks tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth to shorten the deficit, but it wasn't enough as the Black Knights ultimately picked up the win.

The Peacocks (2-18, 0-6 MAAC) totaled six hits on the day while Army (12-10, 4-2 Patriot League) recorded just two more.

Junior right fielder RJ Azarieh led the charge with two hits and two RBIs, before also registering a run himself in the ninth. He now has hits in three of his last four games.

Saint Peter's two other RBIs belonged to Luke Schwartz after he singled to left center in the final inning, bringing home Joey Dwyer and Azarieh. Schwartz has recorded at least one hit in 11 of the last 12 games.

On the mound against the Black Knights, Alex Angelidis pitched 4.1 innings after stints from Joey Tonnotti and Jackson Thorne. Angelidis allowed just four hits while recording two strikeouts and zero walks. Luca Bruno closed things out for the Peacocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After getting walked in their first at-bats, Alex Manent and Bobby Lavely put Saint Peter's on the board after a hit up the middle by Azarieh brought them home. The Peacocks went into the bottom of the first with a 2-0 lead over the Black Knights.

Army wasted no time responding, even after two quick outs by the Peacocks in the field. Despite having one out to work with, the Black Knights managed to put up four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead over SPU.

The Peacocks had a hard time getting back in the game as they went through just nine batters through the next three innings. Army continued to extend its lead until it had a 9-2 advantage heading into the ninth inning.

It was the top of the ninth when Saint Peter's found its groove again as the first two Peacocks in the batting order got on base. A groundout by Allen Ramos allowed the runners to get into scoring position with two outs on the board. Schwartz recorded a hit to send the runners home and make it 4-9, but a flyout on the next play ended the game.

UP NEXT
The Peacocks hop right back on the road to play at La Salle tomorrow, Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET.
