Box Score 2 JERSEY CITY, NJ– The Saint Peter's softball team (4-14, 1-7 MAAC) dropped Tuesday's conference doubleheader with the Manhattan Jaspers (8-18, 4-4 MAAC) at Jaroschak Field, falling 6-4 in the first contest and 14-3 in the second.
Kiana Kadena Matsuda batted 3-for-3 in the first game, while
Olivia Christopher and
Hannah Klotz combined for four hits in the nightcap.
Morgan Lipansky opened game one, going 4.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits.
Ava White (1-4) came in for relief, giving up two earned runs on four hits and was ultimately credited with the loss.
Saint Peter's controlled the game early, carrying a 4-1 lead into the fifth inning, but struggled at the plate late, striking out six times while leaving eight runners stranded compared to Manhattan's three.
The Peacocks collected nine hits in the game, with
Kiana Kadena Matsuda pacing the offense with a 3-for-3 effort, adding two RBIs and her fourth double of the season.
Summer Solitaria went 2-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI, and a double.
Brielle Coppola (0-3) was credited with the loss in game two, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up six earned runs on nine hits and eight walks. The Peacocks combined for seven hits in the nightcap, with
Olivia Christopher going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while
Hannah Klotz finished 2-for-3 with a double.
WHAT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
Manhattan opened the game with a one-out solo homer to left field. In the bottom half of the inning,
Kiana Kadena Matsuda doubled to center field, advanced to second on a walk, and scored when
Carlee Charles singled to left, tying the score at one apiece.
After
Morgan Lipansky retired the side to open the second inning, the Peacocks put two more runs on the board in the bottom half of the frame.
Summer Solitaria got the inning started with a double to left field.
Olivia Christopher followed with a one-out single to second, moving Solitaria to third. Christopher stole second to eliminate the double-play ball, and Kadena Matsuda ripped a bases-clearing single to center field to give Saint Peter's a 3-1 lead.
Lipansky sent Manhattan down in order again, and Saint Peter's added another insurance run in the third.
Paige Seemon started the inning with a double to left field and later advanced to third on a sacrifice hit from
Angela Tremarco. With two outs, Solitaria singled to second, driving in Seemon.
In the fourth, Manhattan added a pair of runs from back-to-back singles, an advancement on a flyout to center, a passed ball, and a triple, cutting the deficit to 4-3. In the fifth, the Jaspers used a walk, an advancement on a groundout, and a single to left that put runners on the corners with two outs. After a failed pick-off attempt that sent the ball into the outfield, two runs scored, giving Manhattan a 5-4 lead.
The Jaspers added an insurance run in the top half of the final inning with another solo home run. Saint Peter's threatened in the final frame with a Kadena Matsuda walk and a
Hannah Klotz single, but a foul out and strikeout ended the game in favor of Manhattan, 6-4.
GAME TWO
Manhattan opened game two with an early run off a walk, a stolen base, a single, and a double steal to home to go up 1-0. Manhattan loaded the bases in the second from a pair of singles and a walk, but the Peacocks were able to leave them stranded.
Saint Peter's was able to get runners in scoring position from back-to-back hits from
Carlee Charles and
Paige Seemon, along with a wild pitch, but a strikeout and a pop-up ended the opportunity.
A single to right, a stolen base, and a double to center field gave Manhattan a 2-0 lead in the third. Manhattan broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning.
Two walks, a stolen base, two groundouts, and a double put the Jaspers up 4-0. Another walk, a stolen base, and a single extended the lead to 6-0. A wild pitch, a walk, and a Peacock error pushed the score to 8-0.
Saint Peter's responded in the bottom half with three runs of their own. A hit by pitch, a single from
Summer Solitaria, and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners for the Peacocks with one out.
Olivia Christopher singled to right, bringing in
Lauren Czerwinski.
Hannah Klotz singled to second base to load the bases, and back-to-back walks drove in two runs to bring the score to 8-3.
The Jaspers added another six runs in the sixth with two doubles to center field, a trio of walks, two stolen bases, a hit by pitch, and an infield single to go up 14-3. In the final frame, Saint Peter's drew a walk but went down in order, completing the sweep for Manhattan.
UP NEXT
Saint Peter's has a few days' rest before heading back to Jaroschak Field for a non-conference doubleheader against the FDU Knights on Thursday, March 26. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with game two to follow at 3 p.m.
